  8. Messianic expectations/pretenders For most devout Jews, it seemed as if the exile of Israel were still continuing. For, though they were physically living in the land of their forebears, the land of promise, it seemed as if Yahweh, the God of their forebears, had abandoned them. They were strangers in their own lands, ruled by men who did not worship Yahweh. They longed for the day when Yahweh would act in power to cleanse the land of these idolaters and re-establish his own rule (Yahweh’s kingdom) through his own anointed priest or king (messiah in Hebrew, Christos in Greek, lit.   9. Messianic expectations/pretenders There was one Judas, a Galilean, of a city whose name was Gamala, who, taking with him Zadok, a Pharisee, became zealous to draw them to a revolt. Both said that this taxation was no better than an introduction to slavery, and exhorted the nation to assert their liberty; as if they could procure them happiness and security for what they possessed, and an assured enjoyment of a still greater good, which was that of the honor and glory they would thereby acquire for magnanimity. They also said that God would not otherwise be assisting to them, than upon their joining with one another in such councils as might be successful, and for their own advantage; and this especially, if they would set about great exploits, and not grow weary in executing the same. The Son of Man The image of riding the clouds is reserved for God or as a description of pagan gods in the Old Testament, outside of this text in Daniel (Exod. 14:20; 34:5; Num. 10:34; Ps. 104:3; Isa. 19:1). So the image shows how intimately the function of the Son of Main is tied to divine authority even though the description is of a human - Darrel Bock, Jesus according to scripture

The Son of the Father • Jesus transcends OT messiah categories See John 8:58, Matt 12:42, 22:43-44 (Ps 110:1) Here, Jesus’ exclusive claim to be able to bring us into a relationship with the Father is grounded on the fact that as the Son, he alone, among all humanity, knows the Father. If we are to know the Father, we must depend on the Son to reveal him to us (cf. John 1:18). Jesus is not just one of God’s many sons; he is the Son, to one to whom the Father has handed “all things,” the one whose prerogative it is to choose who will know the Father. Reflect on that claim for just a moment: Jesus asserts it is his prerogative to choose who among all humanity will come to know the Father, that is, who will come to enjoy that relationship with God the Father.
