  7. Other USV Types • Full Displacement • Hydrofoils • Sailboats • Multi-hulls • Catamaran • Trimaran • SWATH • M-hull

  8. USV Strengths • Unmanned vehicle specialty missions • Dull, Dirty, Dangerous • How does this translate for USV’s? • MAXIMIZE Persistence • Increase Payload Fraction • Trade-off between fuel and sensors • Improved Seakeeping • Allow USV to operate in higher seastates • Increase maintenance intervals • Reduce breakdowns • Vessel systems monitoring • Electronically controlled raw water cooling systems • Fault tolerant software/programming

  9. USSV Program • Objective • To demonstrate improved operational capability of Unmanned Surface Vehicles by optimizing the vehicle’s performance characteristics for selected missions • Clean sheet design • Optimize range, endurance, speed, payload fraction, seakeeping, tow thrust, etc. • 6.2 program, but focused on rapid “time to market”

  10. LCS USV USSV-HTF USSV-HS Low-speed, High endurance, SS-5 at low speed high payload / tow-load Fwd refuel option for range 18,100 lbs displacement at launch High-Speed, high endurance, SS-5 at low speed SS-4+ at high speed Moderate payload / fwd refuel option 21, 500 lbs displacement at launch 11-meter RHIB Moderate-speed, moderate-endurance, SS-5 at low speed SS-3 at moderate speed moderate payload / tow-load 11-meter RHIB commonality 9 ton maximum displacement 1. 15. Cascading Vehicles • USV are naturally capable of supporting other UV’s • Mother Platforms • Small UUV’s with limited transit speed, range, and comm’s • Small UAV’s with limited endurance, payload • Refuel’ers • Communication links • crossing the divide from under water to above water • Control centers • coordinating the operations of several less autonomous vehicles

  16. SWATH USV LCS requirements currently limit vessel size and therefore capability. What if this was not a requirement? Current USVs cannot fully operate in SS4. What trade-offs must be made to achieve meet this requirement ?
