RLSC Goals • Primary Goals • Improved access • Lower costs • Better use of campus buildings • Excellent environmental conditions • Joint access to a shared journal archive • Cooperative collection development • Secondary Goals • Digitizing collections • Preservation of digital files, paper, film, etc. • Participation by non-members

Harvard Depository Model • 1985: Created by Harvard University • 2005: 30 facilities, 50 storage modules • High density achieved through shelving books by size • One office and storage processing area • Modular storage units that allow for expansion. • 2.66 million volume capacity • 15,000 square feet of storage • 14,400 shelves • 30-foot high stacks accessed via high-lift vehicle • 50 F, 30% relative humidity

  18. Summary Challenge: Housing Library Collections A known problem faced by several member institutions. This problem will be addressed many times by individual institutions or once for the group. Solution: Harvard Depository Model A proven and highly successful solution in use across the country. Opportunity RLSC will serve as a foundation for other collaborative projects with members & non-members.
