  2. THE ORIGINS Giufà, is a characterofthe Italian folklore. The anecdotes abouthis life havebeenretold and memorizedthroughcenturiesoforaltradition. Heisusuallyrecognizedasthe "villagefool", but, totell the truth, hisactions and wordsoftenprovide a moralmessage. So, hispeers‘ reactions, ratherthanGiufà's outrageousbehavior, are judged at the end ofeach story. Thesefeatures are visible in the folk charactersofmanyMediterraneancultures. In fact, itseemsthatthisfunnycharactercomesfromstoriesofNasrudinHedjia, a Turkish folk character. Itisbelievedthatduringthe Islamicrule, storiesofthis man wereabsorbedinto the Sicilianoraltradition, transformedtoexemplify cultural norms and eventuallytransmittedthroughoutsouthern Italy.
