  1. Objective • Through reading and discussion, students will analyze the characterization and use of the foreshadowing and magic realism within The House of the Spirits by discussing the novel and creating a family tree with the characters. • Agenda: • Quiz/reading question/Dialectical journal check • Turn in research paper • Brainstorm character list • Family tree • Discussion/Exit ticket

  2. End of 9 Weeks • Grades close TODAY! • Last assignments for this nine weeks: • Essay—If you have not turned in your essay, I need it by the end of the day. • Research paper: You may e-mail me your research paper by midnight tonight. • Those are your last grades for this nine weeks.

  3. Period 4 • Finish presentations from last week.

  4. Del Valle Family • Clara • Rosa • Uncle Marcos • Nivea • Barbaras • Nana • Trueba Family • Esteban • Ferula • Dona Ester • Nana • Pedro Garcia • Pedro Segundo Garcia • Pancha Garcia • Peasants The Capital Tres Marias

  5. Family tree Create a family tree, with three details about the characterization of each character in The House of the Spirits so far. • Include any foreshadowing you know about the character and any magic realism Allende uses for the character. • You should each have your own family tree, but you may discuss with others to create it and “put the pieces” together.

  6. Discussion • Why would the author use two narrators? • What time period does the novel take place in? • What is the relationship between the characters? • Is Esteban good or bad for Tres Marias? What makes Esteban the way that he is? Do you like him as a character? • What do you know, based on foreshadowing, is going to happen? • What examples of magic realism did you see?

  7. Develop two discussion questions • Write two questions you have about what is happening, or discussion questions for these chapters.

  8. Discussion • Exit ticket: • Who is one character that stands out to you so far, and how is the author (Allende) using characterization, foreshadowing and/or magic realism in describing that character?
