Background • In lake ecosystems Daphnia-waterfleas are crucial mediators of interactions between primary producers (algae) and secondary consumers (predators e.g. fish) • Nutritional content of algae and parasites affect Daphnia growth, reproduction and population dynamics • Interdependence of these two factors is not known Pulkkinen & Aalto

  3. Background cont. • Nutritional value of algae • affects the resistance of Daphnia against parasites • affects the filtering rate of Daphnia • we study the effect of these two factors on the infection risk of Daphnia Pulkkinen & Aalto

  4. How to study • Model system (existing laboratory cultures) • Daphnia magna -waterflea • Glugoides intestinalis -parasite • Scenedesmus acutus –green alga • Place: aquaria room at Ambiotica • Work possible also as a pair or first part alone Pulkkinen & Aalto
