  3. 8 glazed, donut holes at 52 calories each = 416 calories 8 oz orange juice = 110 calories Reward #1 8: 00 a.m. Student Delegate Meeting Total calories in addition to breakfast = 526 calories

  4. Reward #2Social Studies Class • 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. • Correct answers to social studies questions • 1 large lollipop = 100calories

  5. Recess • 10:00 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. • Played a game of 4 square

  6. 1 piece of cheese piece = 271 calories 1 piece of chocolate cake with icing = 234calories Reward #3 Classroom Celebration 10:30 a.m. Pizza Party Total Calories in addition to breakfast and before lunch=505 calories

  7. Lunch • 12:00 – 12:30 p.m.

  8. Lunch Recess • 12:20- 12:35 p.m. • Talking with friends

  9. Reward #4 Math Class • 12:40 - 1:00 p.m. • Answered another question correctly • 1 large cookie = 156 calories

  10. Reward # 5Student of the Month • 1:00 – 1:45 p.m. • Watched a movie and had popcorn, which totaled 100 calories

  11. Reward # 6 Homework Time • 1:45 – 2:30 p.m. • Finishes homework early and is rewarded with a handful of skittles = 100 calories

  12. After-School • 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. • Plays with friends

  13. Reward # 7 Softball Game • 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. • Won the game and received a 20 oz. slushie which totaled 160 calories

  14. Dinner • 6:00 p.m. • Dinner with the family

  15. Reward # 8 Clean Plate Club • For cleaning her plate, she was given: • 1 cookie = 78 calories • 6 oz. of milk = 92 calories • Total calories = 170

  16. Total Food-based Rewards • 8 glazed donut holes with 8 oz. OJ (526 calories) • Large lollipop (100 calories) • 1 piece of cheese pizza & 1 piece of chocolate cake with icing (505 calories) • Large cookie (156 calories) • Popcorn (100 calories) • Handful of skittles (100 calories) • 20 oz. slushie (160 calories) • 1 cookie with 6 oz. of milk (170 calories)

  17. Total Calories from Rewards 1, 817 calories

Rewards Add Up • The total calories consumed, in addition to breakfast, lunch, and dinner, was around 1, 820 calories. • These extra calories added up quickly and this is just from rewards!!!! • Everyone had good intentions to reward this student, but no one knew that she had been rewarded all day long.

  19. What Can YOU do? • Ask children what types of rewards they want- you may be surprised to find that food is the last thing they want. • Try offering rewards that get them moving more, like playing a game of basketball. • Offer rewards that will foster learning, such as a new book or a trip to the library.
