Our mission
Our Mission

The American Nuclear Society serves its members in their efforts to develop and safely apply nuclear science and technology for public benefit through knowledge exchange, professional development, and enhanced public understanding.

What mission means
What Mission Means

  • ANS has no bottom line

  • (though we must remain solvent)

  • We have a synthesis, a combination of

  • bottom lines regarding our performance

  • We want to have a positive effect on our members

  • We want a positive effect on society

  • For the good of all

Our structure
Our Structure

Standing Committees

Professional Divisions

ANS Staff

Leadership
Leadership

  • Take a group of “volunteers” with limited staff support and make something happen

  • Need you to create “wants”

  • Create a record of performance

What our structure does for us
What Our Structure Does for Us

  • Standing Committees

  • Divisions

  • Board

  • Staff

Board of directors
Board of Directors Groups

  • By law, ANS (as a not-for-profit organization) must be governed by a Board of Directors.

  • Members have an obligation to ensure that the best interests of ANS are served.

  • The Board (by law) is the governing body of the organization.

  • Members must refrain from acting on personal or special interests.

Staff
Staff Groups

Hired by the Executive Director

Support the mission of the Society

Consistency in providing support to ANS mission

Many diverse functions

Staff members’ needs:

To be thanked

Clear things to support

Linkage to “two” missions

Team activity
Team Activity Groups

The name of a Division or Committee or TG or WG will be placed on your back

Interact with the other leaders to find out what’s on your back and take that seat

  • Who are you?

  • Two questions (Y/N) per leader

  • Move and be active!

  • Then take on that role

Take aways
Take-aways Groups

In your leadership role, what will you be teaching/mentoring today/this week?

Create a record of performance (performance is the only thing that will encourage members to trust and support you.)

One member does well, does better, acknowledge that, others will challenge themselves.

What do you want to be remembered for as Chair?
