  4. Defining The Problem Healthcare workforce shortages are present in almost every area of New York……..

  5. What is the extent of the problem in our state? Physician Shortage • Deficit of 350 primary care MD/DO by 2020 • Majority of NY lacks adequate safety net health center services • 69% of rural hospital ER’s have to divert patients for specialty care • Child and Adult Psychiatrist shortage

  6. What is the extent of the problem in our state? Nursing • Shortage in NY projected to grow to 2X the largestshortage ever by 2025 • Need a 30% increase in nursing grads to keep up. • NY: Over 5,000 additional RN job openings per year 2006-2016 • State Growth in Demand: 14%

  7. What is the extent of the problem in our state? Increased Demand for Other Health Workers, in NY 2006-2016 • Home Health Aides: 31% increase • Dental Hygienists: 28% increase • Physician Assistants: 27% increase • Physical Therapists: 15% increase • Lab Techs: 15% increase • Medical Records: 15% increase

  8. Defining the Problem ….even in areas of high unemployment……. 9.4% unemployment non-metro county statewide average, March 2011

  9. Defining the Problem ….where potential students are trying to get into education/training programs…. As many as 50% of qualified applicants are turned away from nursing programs due to lack of capacity ( NLN, 2010)

  10. Defining The Problem ….and where economic developers are struggling to boost the economy…… From 1993-2007 393,000 jobs “left” New York (Empire Center, 2010)

  11. Defining The Problem ……and healthcare providers have many job openings…… On any given day there are over 15,000 hospital-based jobs open in New York State (HANYS, 2010)

  12. Defining The Problem …..and schools are wondering how to provide career guidance with fewer dollars… Does anyone not already know about school program cuts?

Defining the Problem Healthcare workforce shortages are present in almost every part of New York, even in areas of high unemployment where students are trying to get into training programs and economic developers are struggling to boost the economy and healthcare providers are trying to fill jobs and schools are wondering how to provide career guidance with fewer dollars.
