  1. Clinical Placement Final Presentation

Final Clinical Placement • Upon the completion of the final clinical placement, students will be required to prepare a presentation as the final assignment • There will be no grading for the assignment, but rather a pass/fail • In order to successfully graduate from the PTT course, this assignment must be completed

  3. Overview • Students should have been exposed to a wide variety of patients and conditions • Not all students would have had the same exposure • In order to promote group learning, students will present on an interesting case they were directly involved in during their time on the final placement

  4. Objectives • The objectives for this assignment are: • Promote group learning throughout the PTT class • Share new skills or techniques that students may have been taught by mentors during placement • Encourage students to share information and skills with co-workers in the PT field • Encourage students to self-reflect on care or practices • Expose students to group presentations as part of the interdisciplinary care approach • Help instill confidence in newly graduating PTTs

Instructions • Students will choose one patient’s case they were directly involved in during their placement • Advise on who to pick? • A case that was of particular interest • A case with a rare condition or injury • A complex case with a detailed treatment plan • A case that was particularly done well • A case that did not go as well as planned

  6. Instructions • Students will prepare a visual presentation • Power point presentation • Poster board • Hand-out • Pamphlet • Etc. • Students will be given a 30 minute time slot to present to classmates and instructors

  7. Specifics • Presentations will include the following information: • Patient’s complete subjective history • Objective assessment tests and results • Patient problem list • Treatment plan • Treatment provided • Patient’s response to treatment • Discharge criteria • Discharge status

  8. Subjective Examination • Following the format taught to students, will include: • Chief complaint • Mechanism of injury • Quality and quantity of pain • Aggravating factors • Relieving factors • Social and employment history • Past medical history • Medication history • Any previous treatments • Special questions • Red flag questions • Outcome measure used and value

  9. Objective Examination • Objective findings should include: • Areas inspected • Structures palpated • Active ROM movements and values • Passive ROM movements and values • Strength testing and values • Neurological testing and values • Special test results

  10. Patient Problem List • Should be established based on the assessment findings • Should be in order of importance • First on the list is the most important issue to address • Indicate if any of the problems are outside the scope of PT and if other health care professional were involved

  11. Treatment Plan • Established based on the findings of the subjective and objective exam and the problem list • Each point on the treatment plan should address a point on the problem list • Also listed in order of importance

  12. Treatment Provided and Response • Outline what exact treatment was provided to the patient • Settings, frequency and duration of treatments should also be outlined • Outline the patient’s overall response to treatment: • Better? • Worse? • No change?

  13. Discharge • Discharge criteria based on the patient’s problem list • Outline how or if the patient reached the discharge criteria • Outline the justification as to why the patient was discharged? • Outcome measure value at discharge

  14. Additional Information • The following information will also be included in the presentation: • Successful points or things that went well • Areas for improvement • Justification for any missing information • And self-learning or something that the PTT may do different next time

  15. Oral Presentation • Student’s will present their case presentations orally to their PTT class and instructors • At the end, the audience is encouraged to ask the student questions • Once completed, the student will be granted a passing mark

  16. Final Points • Students will be provided with in-class time to prepare their presentations • Presentations should not exceed 30 minutes but will be a minimum of 15 minutes • If available, pictures of the actual patient are encouraged to be added to the presentation
