National One Health University Networks • National OH university network established to share and disseminate the benefits of the regional network • These networks involve multiple faculties within each country involved in educating professionals in the skills required to support the One Health approach • National Network Coordinating offices are being established.

  7. The main objective of VOHUN is to develop the One Health approach through training activities and research in the universities and to build a generation of new lecturers and researchers having a full range of knowledge and skills in practicing "One Health"

Main activities • Operational and Communication • VOHUN National Coordinating Office (NCO) • OH newsletter in both Vietnamese and English. • One Health – Ecohealth in Vietnam in brief • Training and workshop • Infectious/Zoonotic diseases short courses (4/2012) • OH session, Mekong Sante Conference (5/2012) • One health core competence workshops (7/2012) • OH session, VPHA Conference (10/2012) • Ecohealth Conference in Kunming (10/2012) • PMAC in Bangkok, Thailand (1/2013)

The way forward (1) • Communication • Develop and maintain the VOHUN website; OH newsletter in both Vietnamese and English. • Coordinate with ministries & institutions to ensure an awareness of VOHUN and to advocate for OH training and research. • Training • OH faculty development in Nha Trang (May 6-9, 2013) & follow-up afterward • OH core competence and curriculum mapping • OH introduction (8/2013) • OH curricula and material development (10/2013) • OH training curriculum and material evaluation (2/2014) • Pilot OH training course (4/2014) • Veterinary medicine curricula development (7/2013) • OH risk assessment (6/2013) • Ecohealth/One health training course (5/2013)

The way forward (2) • Development of case studies to be integrated with academic research institutes (NIHE, NIVR, NHTD) • Leptospirosis • Anthrax • Rabies • Streptococcus suis • Conference & workshop • Asia Pacific Conference on Public Health “Climate change and population health”, Nha Trang (Nov 21-22, 2013) • Southwest Vietnam OH university network workshop • Strengthening University-Government Partnerships • VOHUN will be involved with Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs)

University-Government Partnerships • Universities are uniquely positioned to develop and provide an appropriately qualified workforce for governments, and to offer training opportunities for in-service capacity building • Once the curriculum mapping and course development activities have been completed, innovative programs will be designed in collaboration with government agencies to meet current and future needs for training OH professionals • The aim is to assist governments to transform the current and future workforces and to build sustainable capacity to respond to future outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases

Key areas where Universities support Governments • Universities are human resource providers, governments are end-users of university undergraduate programs • In-service training – Masters degree programs, short courses and workshops are relevant for government staff • Qualified University staff often sit on government technical committees and working groups and assist with policy development • Universities provide research resources for government programs on priority emerging infectious diseases
