  2. What is online dating? • Online dating is a dating system which allows individuals which allows people to make contact and communicate with each other over the internet usually with the objective of developing a personal romantic or sexual relationships

  3. When did it emerge? • The first recorded online dating site started in 1990 with a Long Island dial-up bulletin board service • The first record of a “www” dating site was in April of 1995

  4. How popular is online dating? • According to a 2006 article 97 million Americans, ages 45 and older, are engaging in online dating • The target demographic of online dating is people age 19 to 45 • Since September 11th, 2001 there has been a significant increase in women in their 30’s and 40’s using these sites

  5. Why do people engage in online dating? • Speed • Fear of being alone • Shyness • Ability to talk freely • Options • Ability to be choosy • Find someone on a global scale

Statistics about online dating • 15% of American adults know someone who has been in a long-term relationship or married someone he or she met online. • 3rd largest revenue producer of all paid content sites (behind music and gaming) • 43 % of online daters have gone on dates with people they met through sites • 52 % of those who have used an online dating site say they have had a mostly positive experience
