The Preterite. A completed action in the Past tense. The preterite shows a past, completed action. I went to the store. I bought a shirt. I paid in cash. In the present tense conjugations, the stress is on the stem. In the preterite, the stress is on the ending.

  2. The preterite shows a past, completed action. I went to the store. I bought a shirt. I paid in cash.

  3. In the present tense conjugations, the stress is on the stem.

  4. In the preterite, the stress is on the ending.

  5. The stem for regular verbs in the preterite is the infinitive stem. tomar tom- comer com- abrir abr-

  6. -é -aste -ó -amos -aron Preterite endings for -ar verbs are:

  7. tomé tomaste tomó tomamos tomaron -ar verbs; example: tomar.

  8. hablé hablaste habló hablamos hablaron Conjugate hablar.

  9. trabajé trabajaste trabajó trabajamos trabajaron Conjugate trabajar.

  10. Verbs ending in -gar, -car, and -zar have a spelling change. pagar jugar llegar buscar tocar practicar almorzar empezar comenzar

  11. pagué pagaste pagó pagamos pagaron -gar verbs; example: pagar

  12. jugué jugaste jugó jugamos jugaron Conjugate jugar.

  13. llegué llegaste llegó llegamos llegaron Conjugate llegar.

  14. busqué buscaste buscó buscamos buscaron -car verbs; example: buscar

  15. toqué tocaste tocó tocamos tocaron Conjugate tocar.

  16. practiqué practicaste practicó practicamos practicaron Conjugate practicar.

  20. -í -iste -ió -imos -ieron Preterit endings for -er and -ir verbs are:

  24. volví volviste volvió volvimos volvieron -ar and -er stem-changers are regular in the preterit.

  25. -ir stem-changers change in the third-person forms.

  26. pedí pediste pidió pedimos pidieron e changes to i as seen in pedir.

  27. serví serviste sirvió servimos sirvieron Conjugate servir.

  28. repetí repetiste repitió repetimos repitieron Conjugate repetir.

  29. seguí seguiste siguió seguimos siguieron Conjugate seguir.

  30. reí reíste rio reímos rieron reír is a little different

  31. dormí dormiste durmió dormimos durmieron o changes to u as in dormir.

  32. morí moriste murió morimos murieron Conjugate morir.

  33. A few verbs change the spelling to reflect the sound. i changes to y between strong vowels.

  34. Also note the accents used to prevent diphthongs.
