  2. The Great Depression • What do you know about the Great Depression? What caused it? What was life like?

  3. Standing Up • Have you ever stood up for something that was not popular? If so, what was the situation? If you have not, think of an example of when you saw someone else stand up for something, and you admired his or her courage.

  4. Prejudice/Judgment • Have you ever experienced prejudice or judgment? What was the circumstance? How did you feel? • Do you agree or disagree with the statement “prejudice is a concern of the past that does not affect us now.”

  5. Good and Evil • Do you believe that people are inherently good or evil? Why? Can you think of any examples that support your opinion?

  6. Most Important Lesson • What was the most important lesson that you learned before you were ten years old?

  7. Childhood Best Friend • When you were a child, what was your “idea” of a best friend? How has that changed over the years?

Book Cover • People often say, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” • What do you think this means? • Have you ever made up your mind about someone based on their appearance or what others said only to change your mind once you took the time to know them? • Can you think of a time when someone judged you before they knew you or judged you based on your appearance?

  9. Trial Verdict • Jem, Scout, and Dill are very upset by the jury’s verdict. • Can you think of a trial in which you disagreed with the jury’s verdict? • Do you think our court system is fair? Why or why not? • Would you change anything about our court system?
