  2. Mo Yan is the first Chinese writer to win the Nobel Prize in literature.

  3. Zhu Xi (1130—1200), an ideologist(思想家),educator, neo-confucian(理学家)and philosopher, was born in what is now called “You Xi”.

  4. 观 书 有 感 朱 熹 半亩方塘一鉴开, 天光云影共徘徊。 问渠哪得清如许, 为有源头活水来。        Thoughts from Reading • The little pond opens as a mirror bright. • Wander in it cloud-shadows and daylight. • Asked how it could be so clear and clean, • Told from the source fresh water flows in.

  5. Francis Bacon Shakespeare

  6. A fallen blossom is coming back to the branch Look, a butterfly! • Questions: 1. Why do people write? 2. Why do we read? 3. How to read?

  7. How to read English efficiently? • 1. Predicting the content (预测全文) • 2. Skimming for main ideas(略读/跳读) • 3. Guessing new words(生词猜测) • 4. Scanning for details(查阅/扫描) • 5. Making inference (推理判断) • 6. Identifying opinion and attitude (观点态度)

  8. People react to advertisements in different ways. Some people find ads useful and entertaining; others think that they are annoying. Defenders of ads say that ads help us make informed choices as consumers by introducing good quality products. On the other hand, critics sometimes accuse companies of using ads to mislead us by making us believe that a certain product is better than it really is or that we will be happier if we buy it.

  9. The psychology (心理学) clearly shows thatthere is a strong connection between success and happiness. For example, people who have a comfortable income, or high status (地位) in society are usually happiest. But which one comes first, happiness or success? It's generally believed that it's successthat leads to happiness and this is supported by much psychological research. Of course it's not an either-or situation. The two are related to each other in all sorts of ways. Butto only talk about how success affects happiness is ignoring half the story. Psychologist Professor Sonja Lyubomirsky and his colleagues have pointed out that there is plenty of evidence to provehappiness can, in fact, lead to success. Their studies have produced a list of interesting results, which find that people in a positive mood are more likely to: • 1. Talk to others. • 2. Be interested in leisure activities. • … • 9. Owe success to their own skills. • The study also notes that there are plenty others that play an important part in success. But in general, it reminds us to make room for happiness. Because how we think about happiness and success has a deep effect on how we live our lives. If we think that successmainly leads to happiness, thensome of us will focus more on success, without considering happiness right now, believing that happiness will naturally flow from success when we achieve it. However, feeling better in the moment is not only more pleasant but is also likely to open our minds to opportunities at work, play and in our personal relationships. It's recognizing and taking these opportunities that will lead us to success.

  10. Good health is the most valuable thing a person can have, but one cannot take good health for granted. It is important to remember that the body needs proper care in order to be healthy. There are three things that a person can do to help stay in good shape: eat right food ,get enough sleep, and exercise regularly. • Proper nutrition is important for good health. Your body cannot work well unless it receives the proper kind of “fuel”. Don't eat too much food with lots of sugar and fat. Eat plenty of foods high in protein ,like meat, fish, eggs and nuts. Vegetables and fruits are very important because they provide necessary vitamins and minerals. However, don't overeat. It is not helpful to be overweight. • Getting the proper amount of sleep is also important. If you don't get enough sleep, you feel tired and easily get angry. You have no energy. Over a long period of time a little a amount of sleep may even result in a change of personality. Be sure to allow yourself from seven to nine hours of sleep each night. If you do, your body will feel strong and refreshed, and your mind will be sharp. •  Finally, get plenty of exercise. Exercise firms the body, strengthens the muscles, and prevents you from gaining weight. It also improves your heart and lungs. If you follow a regular exercise program, you will probably increase your life-span (寿命).Any kind of exercise is good. Most sports are excellent for keeping the body in good shapes: basketball, swimming, bicycling, running and so on are good examples. Sports are not only good for your body, but they are enjoyable and interesting, too. •  If everybody were to eat the right foods, get plenty of sleep and exercise regularly, the world would be a happier and healthier place. We would all live to be much older and wiser.

I called him several times, but each time his secretary told me that he was in a meeting and that he would call me later. So I waited and waited, but there was still no call. Three hours passing by, I became more and more impatient. I was certain that my agent didn’t care about my work, and he didn’t care about me. I was overcome with that thought. I started to shout at the phone, “Let me wait, will you? Who do you think you are?” At that time I didn’t realize my wife was looking on. Without showing her surprise, she rushed in, seized the phone, tore off the wires, and shouted at the phone, “Yeah! Who do you think you are? Bad telephone! Bad telephone! ” And she swept it into the wastebasket.

Bacon says Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested. • As for our reading, we say: Some materials are to be skimmed, others to be scanned, and some few to be appreciated and understood. Or, as for lines, sometimes we need to understand them, sometimes to understand between them, and sometimes to understand beyond them.

  15. Whenever reading, bear these in mind : 1. Enjoy reading. 2. Make reading part of your life. 3. Apply proper skills to your reading. 4. Use your head , not only your eyes, to read. 5. Skills can’t take the place of practice. So what we need are two things: one is PRACTICE, and the other is MORE PRACTICE. HW
