  1. Passive voice Forming the passive voice” A form of the verb ‘to be’ + the past participle of the verb

  2. Which of the following statements is NOT in passive voice? • Gerald was frustrated by Tom’s antics. • The dog is being neutered by the vet today. • Everybody has decided to bike to work this week. • No one is being served at this restaurant!

  3. Which of the following statements is NOT in passive voice? • Gerald was frustrated by Tom’s antics. • The dog is being neutered by the vet today. • Everybody has decided to bike to work this week. • No one is being served at this restaurant! “has decided” is NOT passive voice: it does NOT have a form of the verb ‘to be’ directly before the past participle, ‘decided’

  4. Which of the following statements is NOT in passive voice? • I heard that you were being beaten up after school today. • Evan was eating the hamburger. • Grammar has been given a bad rap. • Everyone has been vaccinated against the measles, I hope!

  5. Which of the following statements is NOT in passive voice? • I heard that you were being beaten up after school today. • Evan was eating the hamburger. • Grammar has been given a bad rap. • Everyone has been vaccinated against the measles, I hope! “was eating” is not passive voice, because although it DOES have a form of the verb ‘to be’ (WAS), it uses the present participle and not the past.

  6. Which of the following statements is NOT in passive voice? • Wherever you go, you have freedom. • What on earth have you been bitten by? • There were two chocolate bars, but one appears to have been taken. • That will be decided upon later!

  7. Which of the following statements is NOT in passive voice? • Wherever you go, you have freedom. • What on earth have you been bitten by? • There were two chocolate bars, but one appears to have been taken. • That will be decided upon later! The verbs here are simply “go” and “have” so neither uses the passive voice elements.

  8. Changing active to passive and vice versa To change active voice to passive… To change passive to active… Figure out who/what ‘the agent’ is, i.e., who performed the action on the subject? If there is an agent in the sentence, it follows the preposition ‘by’, as in ‘by me.’ Make the agent the subject of the new sentence, performing the action on the object (what WAS the subject of the PV sentence). e.g. Gerry was arrested last night. (PV)(by the police) The police arrested Gerry last night. (AV) • Take the OBJECT of the active voice sentence and make it the subject of the passive voice sentence. s v o e.g. I am having a party. (AV) s passive voice (the agent)A party isbeing had by me. (PV) to be + past participle

  9. Go back to what you know! • If it’s active voice, find the subject, verb and object. • To switch it to passive, make the object of the verb the subject of the new passive voice sentence. s v o E.g. I am having a party. (AV) A party is being had by me. (PV) • If the original sentence is in active voice but the verb is INtransitive – there is NO object, so it CANNOT be made passive. You can ONLY change an ACTIVE VOICE to PASSIVE VOICE if the main verb is transitive – that is, it takes an object.
