Nicaragua • 1830’s – Gained independence from Spain • 1900’s – US sends supplies to prevent poverty • Poverty thought to breed Communism • 1936 – 1979: Somoza family (US backed) controls country • 1979 – Marxist Sandinistas take over • 1990 – US supported Contras (those who opposed Sandinistas) win election
