Molecule of the week: Viagra Viagra (sildenafil citrate) is used for the treatment of erectile disfunction in men. • How it works: • Arousal causes the release of NO from nerves in genitalia • NO stimulates production of cyclic GMP • Cyclic GMP causes vasodilation; changes in blood flow and smooth muscles of vessels. • Sildenafil citrate inhibits • breakdown of cyclic GMP by phosphodiesterases so • vessels stay dilated. Manufactured by Pfizer, FDA approved in Mar 1998 Side effects: fainting, dizziness, headaches, blurred or blue vision (cyc GMP in retina!)
