  1. Back to Basics: Word Tech Tuesdays Lorrie Jackson Lausanne Collegiate School TechTuesdays

Open Word Create a new document Save a new document Insert stuff like clip art or Word Art Change font style and size Format paragraphs Copy and paste text Bold, italicize, and underline Add a header and footer Check your grammar and spelling Use word count What Are We Going to Do? TechTuesdays

  3. To Open Word • Click on Start • Click on Programs • Click on Microsoft Office • Click on Microsoft Word TechTuesdays

  4. To Create a Document • When Word opens, it will open a new document • If it doesn’t, just go to File>New • Type the following: My Holiday Break • Hit Enter twice • Type at least three sentences about your break. QUICKLY! TechTuesdays

  5. To Save a Document • Go to File>Save • At Save In, click down black arrow and look for My Documents • My Documents is usually on Desktop or c:/ drive • Name your file • Hit Save TechTuesdays

  6. Insert Clip Art • Hit enter after the last sentence on your page. • Go to Insert>Picture>Clip Art • Click on a Category you like (Seasons?) • Click once on a Clip Art you like • Click on top icon in gray window to insert clip art TechTuesdays

  7. Change Font • Font - how the text looks • Usually in 12 pt. Times New Roman • Highlight all your text • Go to box at top which says Times New Roman and click black down arrow to select new font • Go to white box with number and do same to change size TechTuesdays

  8. Format Paragraphs • Highlight all text again (hit CTRL + A) • Go to Format>Paragraphs • Change Line Spacing to Double • Highlight your title only • Look next to the letters B I U in the gray bar at the top • Click on the lines two to the right of the U TechTuesdays

  9. Add a Header and Footer • Go to View>Header and Footer • Click on the lines three to the right of the U at the top of the page • Type your name • Scroll to the bottom of the page • Click in the footer box then hit the first icon to the left in the header and footer toolbar • Hit close in the toolbar TechTuesdays

  10. Spelling and Grammar Check • Click just before your title • Go to Tools>Spelling and Grammar • If it finds an error, hit change • Hit ignore if it’s wrong! TechTuesdays

  11. Word Count • Go to Tools>Word Count • Look at how many words you typed! • Good when publishing articles or checking student work TechTuesdays

  13. Bold, Italicize, and Underline • Highlight your title at the top again • Find the letters B I U near the font style and size • Click on the B for Bold • Highlight a word you want to emphasize in your paragraph • Click on I (italicize) or U (underline) TechTuesdays

  14. Copy and Paste Text • Highlight your title • Hit CTRL + C (or Edit>Copy) • Click just below your last sentence. • Hit CTRL + V (or Edit>Paste) • To undo? Hit CTRL + Z (Edit>Undo Typing) TechTuesdays
