  3. WATER SAFETY • SAFE , RESPONSIBLE HUNTERS WILL USE EXTRA CARE TO AVOID ACCIDENTS ON THE WATER. • DROWNING IS THE 2ND LEADING CAUSE OF ACCIDENTAL DEATH , BEHIND AUTO ACCIDENTS.

  4. COMMON CAUSES • MOST ACCIDENTAL DEATHS ON OR AROUND WATER ARE CAUSED BY DROWNING OR EXPOSURE [ HYPOTHERMIA ]. • HERE ARE SOME REASONS WHY BOATING AND WATER RELATED DEATHS OCCUR: LOADING , OVERLOADING , OR IMPROPER BALANCE.

  5. HANDLING WATER EMERGENCIES • 1ST RULE IN WATER SAFETY IS TO HAVE YOUR PFD ( PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICE ) ON. • 2ND RULE IS TO STAY WITH THE BOAT IF YOU CAN. • WATER SURVIVAL TIME INCREASES IF A LONE PERSON IN COLD WATER USES THE HELP POSITION (HEAT ESCAPE LESSENING POSTURE).

  6. HYPOTHERMIA • MEANS LOWERED BODY TEMPERATURE . • DANGER COMES FROM NOT KNOWING THE SYMPTOMS OF HYPOTHERMIA OR THE SITUATIONS IN WHICH IT CAN OCCUR. • IT CAN START IN WET CONDITIONS SUCH AS RAIN, SNOW, OR SLEET.

  7. HYPOTHERMIA (CONT.) • YOU CAN LOSE BODY HEAT AND BE IN DANGER FROM HYPOTHERMIA EVEN WHEN THE TEMPERTURE IS 40 TO 70 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT. • IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE WINTER. • PEOPLE IN POOR PHYSICAL CONDITION ARE MORE LIKELY TO BECOME HYPOTHERMIC.

  8. HYPOTHERMIA PREVENTION • 1ST CONCERN SHOULD BE TO STAY DRY. • 2ND AVOID OVER-EXERTION WHICH LEADS TO FATIGUE • 3RD ALWAYS CARRY PROTECTION FROM THE WIND.

  9. HYPOTHERMIA PREVENTION • 4TH KEEP YOUR HEAD WARM. • 5TH PROPER CLOTHING IS IMPORTANT TO OUTDOOR USERS.
