Introduction • Who we are • Our aim is to help you be as well prepared as you can be! • We will • suggest how to fill out your application form to maximise your chances of being shortlisted; • share information about the interview process from the perspective of both sides of the table; • offer practical tips in planning and co-ordinating your trip; • suggest things to remember while you are away • Look at how to make the report writing as straightforward as possible. • We aim for this to be an interactive session with discussion and debate throughout so that you really get an idea of what to expect and how to make the most of such an opportunity!

Tips and hints (1) • Believe you can do it! • Give yourself enough time • Being really clear what it is you want to do, why and when • What is the issue you want to explore • Have a clear plan about how you will undertake your investigation/visit etc • Do not make assumptions about what the funders/ reviewers already know about you and your area of work • Use literature to support your case • Articulate how your scholarship will help you, your organisation and your profession • Make contact with previous scholars • Follow the application instructions eg deadline, format, style, content • Think about your funding needs carefully, show how the budget relates to your plan • Be realistic and focused, don't propose more work than can be reasonably done

Tips and hints (2) • Prepare for the interview • Making the case for your project/issue • Why should it be funded? • Why are you the person to do it? • How your employer can give you the support you'll need to get it done. • Planning and refining/reviewing • pre, during and post • scheduling, timing and costs • negotiation and re-negotiation • remember the personal stuff is really important too

Tips and hints (3) • Use your mentor • Sounding board • Critical friend • Contacts • Write as you go • Keep a diary/journal/log • Collect things • Take photos • See scholarship as the beginning not the end • Doing something with it all • Bringing others with you on your development journey • Maximising impact for your patients, you and your organisation
