  2. Early life Charles Best was born in 1899 in West Pembroke, Maine, USA. His parents were Luella Fisher & Herbert Huestis Best, who was a country doctor. They were originally from Nova Scotia, CANADA. He moved to Toronto in 1915 to attend U of T. When WWI broke out he joined the Canadian army. When he returned from the war he got his degree in physiology & biochemistry.
  3. accomplishments He & Fredrick Banting discovered insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by beta cells in the pancreas, & is central to regulating carbohydrate & fat metabolism in the body. He was in World War I. He completed his degree in physiology and biochemistry. During World War II he was influential in creating a Canadian program for securing & using dried human blood serum.
  4. quotes The situation with regard to insulin is particularly clear. In many parts of the world diabetic children still die from lack of this hormone. ... [T]hose of us who search for new biological facts and for new and better therapeutic weapons should appreciate that one of the central problems of the world is the more equitable distribution and use of the medical and nutritional advances which have already been established. The observations which I have recently made in parts of Africa and South America have brought this fact very forcible to my attention.  — Charles Best
  5. How did he impact the world?
