What is a ssd

What is a SSD ?

  • SSD stands for Solid State Drive

  • SSD is a data storage device which stores data in microchips

  • No moving parts but same interface as hard disks

  • Quieter, Lower access time and latency

  • Uses NAND-based flash memory

    • Input/ Output Per Sec – 80,000 IOPS compared to 350 for HD

    • Required higher bit rate for fast access of data - SSDs

    • Make use of Flash Memories which are fast but limited in capacity

    • SSDs provide higher capacity along with good speed

  • Portability in Embedded Devices

    • Currently make use of Hard Disks for large capacity storage

    • SSDs would provide similar capacity with greater portability
