2. Goals of our Presentation Introduce the concept of involvement and its relevance in your day-to-day life. To give an understanding of different ways to find out about involvement opportunities. To provide you with an understanding of how being involved will positively impact your URI experience.

3. Goals of our Presentation To challenge you to experiment to find paths to campus involvement that work for you as an individual. To expand your knowledge of how event, job, and involvement opportunities are promoted throughout the University of Rhode Island.

4. What is involvement? Involvement, in its purest form is the fact or condition of being involved with or participating in something. In terms of this presentation, we will be talking about how a student can be involved in the University of Rhode Island community and in the community surrounding URI.

5. Can you give some examples of involvement in terms of URI? Greek Life Work/Study Jobs Clubs Intramural Sports Teams Student Senate Campus Representatives for Major Companies Various Religious Centers Athletics University Jobs (RA’s, URI 101 Mentorships, Orientation, et cetera)

6. What is a community? A community is a collection of people living in a particular area or place. (i.e. "local communities".) In terms of the University of Rhode Island, it is the campus, the faculty and staff, the students, and the people living on and immediately surrounding campus. The surrounding community can mean anything from South Kingstown (the town in which URI is located) to Providence, Cranston, Warwick, or the State of Rhode Island

7. Can you give us some examples of communities on and around URI? GLBT Greek Life Various Majors and LLC’s Residence Halls The “beach community” (Upperclassman that live down the line) The list can go on and on!

8. What does all of this “community involvement” mean? • When we talk about involvement in the University of Rhode Island, we are talking about being involved directly on campus. • This means you are taking part in organizations, working jobs, and volunteering in ways that directly effect the University of Rhode Island, its students, and faculty. • Community involvement means getting involved in service projects, organizations, and jobs that effect the areas and towns around URI and in Rhode Island.

How does involvement impact my day-to-day life? • In many ways: • Leadership • Meet people and make new friends • Experience and experiment • Improve abilities • Get the most out of college • Feel at home faster • Manage stress better • Organize time better • Improve resume • Meet organizational advisors • Make memories

11. Greek Life – The Rush! Greek life currently consists of just under 20% of the student body here at URI. To join a fraternity or sorority, you have to rush! For more information about Rush, go to the Christopher House which is located next to the Union across the street from parking services. The Christopher House is where the Greek advisor, Inter Fraternal Council members, and Pan-Hellenic members hang out, they know tons about rush.

12. Clubs There are more than 100 different clubs and organizations to get involved in here at URI, ranging from the nutrition club, humans vs zombies, the fencing club and so many more. If you are interested in joining a club, go to the student involvement office in the memorial union. There you can find a list of all of the student organizations and where they meet!

Student Senate Wednesdays, 6:30 PM Student Senate Chambers 3rd floor in the Memorial Union Mission Statement : “The Senate shall be the representative student government of the University of Rhode Island, deriving its power and legitimacy from the consent of the governed. The Senate remains a separate and distinct entity from the University of Rhode Island and all underlying affiliates. As the representative voice of the undergraduate student body of the University of Rhode Island, the Senate shall be obligated to discuss any matters brought before the Senate by a member of the URI community that affect students directly or indirectly as students or as citizens. Resident Advisors RA’s are essential to the everyday life of on-campus living and oversee the activities that occur in the residence halls. “On average, there is one Resident Advisor (RA) for every 25 students.” (housing.uri.edu) To become an RA, you must apply online at http://housing.uri.edu/info/employment.phpthrough the Department of Housing and Residential Life.

18. Become and Orientation Leader Orientation leaders play a crucial role in the lives of incoming freshmen students. Orientation is the first taste of college for incoming freshmen, therefore the OL’s are very upbeat and excited about URI. 19. How involvement positively effects your URI experience • Involvement is important because you: • Meet new people and make friends • Make connections • Gain knowledge • Improve leadership and communication skills • Learn how to manage your time wisely • Build your resume • Have fun!

20. What if none of these groups are for me? START A NEW ONE! If you ever want to start your own group, just go to the Student Senate chambers located on the second floor of the Memorial Union right next to the coffee house. There, you can fill out the paperwork to get your club moving in the right direction. The Student Senate reps make it simple, and easy to get your own club going!
