Film Editing Techniques • Cutaway- An interruption of a continuously filmed action and inserting a new • Continuity Editing- Smooth flowing shots • Cross-Cutting- alternating between 2 or more shots • Fade- Transition between shots that dissolve into a single color • Key, Keying- Compositing two or more full frame images together • 180 Degree Rule- Rule stating that two characters in the same scene should always have left/right relations to each other.

  8. Walter Murch's six main film editing criteria 1. Emotion- Does the cut reflect the reaction? 2. Story- Does the cut advance the story? 3. Rhythm- Does the cut occur rhythmically sound? 4. Eye-Trace- Does the cut follow the audiences eye focus? 5. 2-Dimensional Place on Screen- Does the cut follow the 180 degree rule? 6. 3-Dimensional Space of Action- Is the cut true to the action?
