  3. Advice from University of Canterbury Tips for completing your application • Make sure your surname, first name, and date of birth are entered correctly. The same information must be entered correctly in your CCRF so they can be matched. • Check you are entering for the 2019 Academic Year • In the ‘More About You’ section, take time to list any sporting achievements, musical abilities, leadership responsibilities, community or cultural activities. The halls are looking for how you will contribute to the hall outside of your academic studies. We recommend you complete this section in a separate document first, then copy and paste it into your application. • The online application will take about 30-40 minutes to complete. The first part is a registration, which once completed, will email you a username and password that will enable you to save and come back to your application if you need to.  Please note that once you click "Save and Continue" at the end of a page, you are able to go back and edit that page butonce you have accepted the "Declaration and Consent" page at the end of your application, any changes will need to be made by Accommodation Services. • If you require a reference, please ensure you give your referee time to complete it before the due date, taking into consideration school term breaks. • CCRF must be completed by the 1st of September • Apply for accommodation scholarships - https://www.canterbury.ac.nz/media/documents/UC-Accommodation-Scholarships-2019.pdf How to apply There are two steps to applying for UC hall or village accommodation: Step 1 — apply online Complete an online application form at www.canterbury.ac.nz/life/accommodation All the information you need to complete your online application is in this guide https://www.canterbury.ac.nz/media/documents/Completing-the-Online-Application-Form-for-2019.pdf As part of the form, you will need to know your preferred halls of residence and provide details for two emergency contacts. A non-refundable processing fee of NZ$100 is required on completion of your application. Step 2 — reference • A reference may be required depending on the hall you are applying to. For reference requirements see https://www.canterbury.ac.nz/life/accommodation/halls/apply/ • For New Zealand school leavers or students who have taken a gap year, you must supply a Common Confidential Reference Form (CCRF). This can be requested online (must be completed by the 1st of September) If you are applying to College House, additional information is required. For details see www.collegehouse.org.nz

  4. Next steps … • Making an application does not guarantee you a place in a hall of residence. • If you are not successful in your preferred hall, your application will be forwarded to your second preference.  • Should your next preferred hall not be able to offer you a room, your application will come back to Accommodation Services and we will communicate to you the available options.  All offers, wait list offers or alternative options will be emailed from Tuesday 2 October. • If you do not receive an offer of place, a hall may offer you a place on their wait list. You can not choose to be on a wait list. You need to decide if you want to go on the wait list or be considered by another hall. Decide as quickly as possible and contact the hall to inform them of your choice. PLEASE NOTE:  READ YOUR OFFER AND CONTRACT CAREFULLY AS SOME HALLS ALLOCATE ROOMS ON A FIRST-IN, FIRST-SERVED BASIS. Accept your offer Once you have an offer you want to accept you need to confirm your place. You must: • Complete and return your contract (check your offer and contract carefully as some halls will allocate rooms on a first-in, first-served basis whereas others will give you until the due date to respond) • Pay the required deposit as specified in the offer (this amount varies from hall to hall)If you are paying for accommodation through a scholarship, please contact your hall to discuss payment options. If you do not return your contract by the due date, your contract will expire and your place will be offered to another student.

  6. Advice from Victoria University - https://www.victoria.ac.nz/accommodation/halls/advice.aspx **There is a non-refundable application fee of NZ$100 when applying for a hall of residence at Victoria** • Choosing hall preferences You need to rank your three preferred halls. Choose carefully–if you decline a place from one, it's unlikely you'll receive another offer. It's not a good idea to only include our most popular halls (Katharine Jermyn Hall, Capital Hall, TePuni Village) on your list. These halls usually fill their spaces with people who chose them as their first preference. Gap year applicants can also submit a reference in the form of a letter from someone such as an employer, tutor, minister or sports coach. • Writing a good personal profile Your profile is an important part of the selection process. It gives us some idea of who you are and what you would bring to the hall community. Try to write at least three sentences for each question wherever possible. Before you start, think about: • how you will describe yourself • occasions where you've got involved and helped others • what you hope your study will lead to • what you like to do in your free time.

  8. How to apply To apply for a college of residence you first need to set up your eVision account. To do this you must select a qualification first and then select Apply Now to register through eVision. After you have created your eVision account find the link on the right to apply for a Residential College or University Flats. **Note - You are able to change your selected qualification through eVision easily if you are unsure what you would like to study next year.** Before you start your application you will need the following information: • Select a qualification and register in eVision. • The contact details for your guardian. • NSN for students studying in New Zealand. • Your NCEA Level 2 results or equivalent. • Your three College preferences. • A 300 word personal statement. Advice from Otago University • Make sure your application is completed online before 28 September to ensure it is processed before selection commences. (Your CCRF must be completed by 1sof September) • Complete the application in full. Missing information will cause delays in your application being processed or accepted. • If you are accepted into a college and payment of fees or a deposit is requested, be sure to pay by the deadline. Note that the deposit and initial payment are not covered by student loans/allowances. • Be aware that some of the colleges are over-subscribed with applications. If your first preference is unable to make an offer, your application will be forwarded to other colleges with vacancies. • Be aware that if you turn down an offer of a place in a college another offer is not guaranteed. • Please let us know as soon as possible if you decide not to study at Otago or no longer require accommodation in a College. There are other students on the waitlist awaiting an offer. • Each year there are a number of withdrawals from late December through to mid-February. Further offers of place are made during this time.
