Why a Discovery Tool? • Catalog • Usability study showed that at UNCG students didn’t like it and are avoiding it when possible • The interface is clunky and hard to use. • Database Pages - • Students found it hard to navigate. • Student didn’t go directly to the source they needed • Used “find” to look for databases

  3. Systems Advisory Committee • Committee structure • Head of Public Services • Head of Reference • 2 Reference Librarians • Head of Cataloging • Head of Acquisitions • Electronic Resources Librarian • Systems Librarian • Assoc. Dean of Electronic Resources and Information Technology

  4. Trial • Research on the different products available • Product demos from the company's on Summon and EBSCO • Summon – looked at other schools sites • EDS – setup a trial for 3 months • Went with EDS July 1, 2010

  5. How we integrated the tool • Named it OneSearch • Main website • Database page • Libguides • Guest site • Mobile site

  6. Usability Testing – Reports from Several Schools • Discovery tools (DT) are popular across all user groups. • Of all user groups, DT are least popular with graduate students. • Overall, DT are much more popular with users than with librarians. • DT are perceived as easy to use. • Users like being able to search many sources through one search box. • All schools that have done usage studies report significant increases in full text items retrieved.

  7. UNCG Librarians • Do you use EDS at the Reference Desk? • 3 out of 6 said yes • “I typically don’t show it because, honestly, I just don’t think about it” • “Yes if they are doing a more general topic”
