  2. Comparative Adjective • The comparative form of an adjective compares two things or people. • My sister is meaner than I am. • My brother is taller than I am. • I am smarter than him. • I am prettierthan her. • I am youngerthan him or her.

Superlative Adjective • The superlative form of an adjective compares more than two things or people. • My sister is the meanest person in my family. • My brother is the tallest person in my family. • My dad is the smartest person in my family. • My mom is the prettiest person in my family. • I am the youngest person in my family.

  4. Comparative/Superlative • For most one-syllable and some two-syllable adjectives, -erand –est are added to form the comparative and superlative.

Comparative/Superlative • However, for most adjectives with two or more syllables the comparative and superlative are formed by adding more and most before the adjective. • Basketball is more popular at my school than volleyball. (Comparative) • Video games are the most popular form of entertainment. (Superlative)

  6. Comparative/Superlative • An adjective of three or more syllables uses less and least to form the negative comparative and superlative. • Do you have shoe laces that are less traditional? (Negative Comparative) • Vanessa is the least traditional member of the family. (Negative Superlative)

  7. Comparative/Superlative • Do not use more, most, less, or least before adjectives that already end with –eror–est. This is called a double comparison and is incorrect. • This bike is more faster than my old bike. • This bike is faster than my old bike. • She is the least shortest in the class. • She is the shortest in the class.

  9. Irregular Comparative Adjective Forms • Do not use the suffixes –er or –estafter the irregular forms of comparative and superlative adjectives. • That game was the baddest game our team ever played. • That game was the worst game our team ever played.

  10. Irregular Comparative Adjective Forms • Do not use more or most before the irregular forms of comparative and superlative adjectives. • English is my most good subject. • English is my best subject.
