  2. How the 2013 SRT Viper WorksBranden Sheehan 12/18/12 Science Term 2 Chrysler has been appending the initials SRT (for "Street and RacingTechnology") to its high-powered models because they were developed by a special team within Chrysler, a group of engineers and designers focused on cars intended less for commuters and more for enthusiasts who wanted a muscle car that wouldn't be out of place on the Indy 500 racetrack. The Dodge Viper SRT10, one of the most powerful supercars ever to roll out of a major American automaker's assembly plant, has become simply the SRT Viper and, after some time spent showing off prototypes at auto shows, the first one to hit the streets is the 2013 model. It’s actually been almost two years since Dodge built a Viper. This car is made out off all Carbon Fiber and aluminum. Front engine, Rear-wheel drive, 2 passenger, 3-doorhatchback. The sports car has been priced at $97,395, which is around $15,000 less than what Chevrolet is asking for with the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdO3EQ2YJ4g

  3. Chart on the 2013 SRT Viper

  4. “Dry” Horsepower To Weight Ratio Meaning • The combinations of less weight and more power place the new SRT Viper GTS 3rd best in the “dry” horsepower to weight ratio, only behind the phenomenal Bugatti Veyron and newly released Ferrari F12. • The Lamborghini Aventador and Corvette ZR1 round out the rest of the top 5. The SRT Viper is offered in 2 trims • The upgraded GTS has upgraded wheels as well as some creature comforts, such as power seats and leather interior trim.

  5. Under The Hood • Under the hood, the new Viper features a new 8.4-liter all-aluminum engine, V-10 overhead-valve engine that will deliver a total of 640 HP and 600 lb of torque. The new engine will be mated to an improved Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission. • The Viper came in two different trims: the SRT10 and the ACR. The 8.4L V10 powered Viper delivered 600 HP and 560 lb of torque, and was mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The 0-60mph sprint was done in fewer than four seconds, while the quarter mile came in at 11 seconds. • The SRT Viper has 660 HP

  6. How do they find out how fast the car will go? • One way they find out how fast the car goes is by using a Dyno. • What is the Dyno? A machine used to measure the WHP (wheel hp) of a car across the cars entire range of gears, also gives torque ratings. • It’s made at least 10 more horsepower; the total is 640 at 6,150 rpm and 600 lb of torque at 4,950. (The engine revs to 6,400 rpm.) Both figures are increases of 40. • What Does RPM Mean? RPM means the rotation(of wheels) Per Minute.

  7. What Made The Engineers Build This Car and what did they do to it? • Engineers credit this with about 10 of the additional horses. A new composite intake manifold with longer runners replaces the old aluminum piece, dropping seven pounds from the top of the engine and ratcheting power up another 10 horses or so and pumping torque up about 20 lb. • An aluminum flywheel cuts 11 pounds, helping revs build faster, and sodium-filled exhaust valves help keep engine temps down as well as saving a pound. In total, the engine is 25 pounds lighter now than its predecessor. • The car goes 0-60 in 3.4 sec, 0-100 in 7.7 sec, ¼ mile in 11.7 sec, and all of that would equal 206 mph top speed in 6th gear.

  8. What is the interior of the 2013 SRT Viper made out of? • The old Viper's interior was cheap. It was one of the biggest turn-offs for potential cross-shoppers, projecting an image of low quality and poor design. None of that can be said for the new interior. • SRT set three goals: Materials, Craftsmanship, and Quality. • The leather, the designers say, is of the same quality demanded by Bentley and Lamborghini. The seats are made by Sabelt, the company used by Ferrari. • Chrysler's 8.4-inch touch-screen infotainment system is standard, but now features custom background images matched to the interior color and special SRT functions like engine output displays, extra gauges, g meters, and a lap timer that can save your track results and send them to a website where you can share them with your friends. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-migl6q9w_g Read

  9. SRT Viper Wheel • Wheelbase/Axle 98.8 in • 7 spoke wheel rims • No AWD

  10. Side Exhaust of the 2013 SRT Viper • Sodium-filled exhaust valves to reduce pressure • Side exhaust with cast aluminum • Made with Carbon fiber

  11. How the SRT Viper got its name for a road race car • It's got more power, less weight and, somehow, wider and more aggressive tires. • Engine size is reduced to 8 Liters by changing cylinder bore and stroke. • Transmission is moved to the rear of the car and will be sourced from Xtrac Transmission. • Xtrac meaning: Xtrac Transmission Technology, is a British engineering company founded in 1984 by the former Hewland engineer Mike Endean to make 4WD systems and gearboxes for rallycross and later rally and racing cars. • Bodywork is carbon fiber composite, with aerodynamic changes (body sides are lowered and front splitter/rear airfoil.)
