Homework 5

- Design an equalization basin (for flow) if the flow rates to a Municipal wastewater treatment plant are given in the following table:
- Design a primary settling tank for an industrial wastewater with a BOD5 of 600 mg/L and an SS of 400 mg/L to achieve a 60% SS reduction. The flow rate is 35 000 m3/day (assume he missing data).

Homework 5

- For a complete mix activated sludge system, determine the aeration tank volume, the hydraulic retention time, the sludge wasted daily, the mass of sludge wasted daily, the fraction of sludge recycled, and the F/M ratio for the following conditions:
- population equivalent 15000 (200 l/c/d)
- influent BOD5=300mg/L,
- effluent BOD5 = 20mg/L,
- yield coefficient=0.55 and
- decay rate=0.05/day.
- Assume also that the MLSS in the aeration basin is 4 kg/m3, in the clarifier sludge is 18 kg/m3 and the mean cell residence time is 12 days.
