How section came up with Younger Members Committee idea? • Discussed at Governing Board meeting: • Average age of SAE member keeps rising • Average younger member drops out after one year of being professional member • Decision was made to focus on getting younger members more involved, show them value of SAE, and keep them members for many years

  3. How Younger Members Vice Chair & Committee were created? • Governing Board voted that a Vice Chair of Younger Members position needed to be created to oversee the committee • Younger Members committee was formed by word of mouth and those who held Governing Board Director positions

  5. Younger Members Committee Purpose and Objectives • To educate younger members on the value of SAE • To keep younger members involved in SAE for more than a year or two • Provide programs younger members will be interested in • To reduce the average age of an SAE member

Student Kickoff Dinner MeetingSeptember 30, 2004 • Social hour and sit down dinner (at Eaton) • Designed to gather student officers, faculty advisors and University Reps • Chapters present information about their upcoming SAE projects • Great way for students to meet and exchange information and ideas

Formula SAE WorkshopOctober 16, 2004 • Designed to provide valuable information on how to make FSAE teams more successful • Presentations cover team issues such as leadership, team management, transition, time management, sponsorship, publicity, budget management and vehicle issues • All presentations are posted on Section website • Videotaped workshop – DVD is available upon request

Student Engineer DayFebruary 17, 2005 • Students are paired with an engineer of similar career interests for the day • Brings textbook theory to the real workplace by offering students a hands-on opportunity in the auto industry • Great opportunity for students to make contacts and understand the “work day” associated with being an engineer • Great way for companies to meet future engineers

High School Poster CompetitionMarch 10, 2005 • Judging based on originality, artistic excellence, aesthetics and relativity to theme – SAE 100th Anniversary • Top ten posters will be on display at Congress • Scholarship money awarded to top three winners • Each participant will receive a ribbon

Student Exhibit CompetitionApril 12, 2005 • Held at Congress in main exhibit hall • Collegiate chapters display their SAE projects and activities in a 10x20 booth • Chapters are judged on their presentations • Opportunity for high visibility among manufacturers, suppliers and alumni • Cash prizes/trophies awarded • All collegiate chapters welcome

Micro-Truck Baja Competition April 13, 2005 • Held at Congress in main exhibit hall • Consists of modifying a stock model all-terrain truck to traverse an all-terrain course • Track has obstacles including steep inclines, water trenches, sand pits and rock fields • Cash prizes/trophies awarded • All collegiate chapters welcome • “Corporate Challenge” held for engineers; great way to get younger members involved

Spring Autocross CompetitionApril 16, 2005 • Scaled-down road race, run against the clock • Participants drive their own cars or FSAE cars • Course laid out on a large parking lot with orange cones defining the boundaries • Object is to drive quickly and smoothly without hitting the cones • Key to a fast time is a car that handles well and is driven smoothly • SAE members allowed to participate

  14. Micro-Electric Vehicle CompetitionApril 21, 2005 • High school student teams design and build a miniature electric vehicle powered by one AA dry cell battery • Vehicles race up a fixed incline, pulling a weighted trailer • Cash prizes/trophies awarded • Pizza and pop provided
