  1. Antigone First job – watch the film!! Before we do – think: What makes a good leader/ ruler? What qualities are needed?

  2. Antigone Objectives To consider how Antigone works as a drama. To comment on how the characters link to themes.

According to Aristotle Good tragedy is characterised by: Seriousness and dignity Involving a great person The great person experiences a reversal of fortune (usually good to bad) This reversal should be caused by the tragic hero’s mistake (hamartia) (think Othello – the wrong type of action for the circumstances) (It is not caused by fate/ god etc) The tragic hero may have a moment of recognition or revelation (anagnorisis) This may be linked to Peripeteia (a reversal of action) but not always (Peripeteia can occur without anagnorisis and vice versa) The audience should feel pity and fear for the character Tragedy results in catharsis (emotional cleansing)

  5. What do you think are the themes and ideas linked to Antigone? • Loyalty to state vs loyalty to family • State control vs rights of individuals • God’s law vs man’s law

  6. Close reading Read from the beginning to line 115: What is the conversation about? What is Antigone’s reasoning? What is Ismene’s reasoning?

  7. Now read on to line 179 What is the Chorus telling us? Why is this important? One of the elements Aristotle considered essential to drama was completeness – that elements of the stories link together logically – therefore we need to know WHY Creon refuses to bury Polynices.

  8. Now read Creon’s speech How does he view kingship? How does he view the state?

  9. Using the information you have collected, produce a poster/table of Antigone and Creon showing their opposing views and linking them to the themes. • Loyalty to state vs loyalty to family • State control vs rights of individuals • God’s law vs man’s law

  10. Notice how Sophocles uses the Chorus: Each member of the group take a speech from the chorus: Note: What has just happened? What information/suggestion is the chorus giving the audience? Is there any irony or foreshadowing in the speech? How is the chorus guiding the audience? Can you make any links to the elements of tragedy we looked at last lesson?

Now present your ideas: Lines 116 Background: Antigone and Ismene have just discussed the burial of Polynices Ismene refuses to help Antigone and Antigone says she will go ahead alone Chorus is giving the audience: The time of day (open air theatre) History of events – Thebes has been saved against Polynices Awareness of importance of the gods of the city – the people are praising the gods Introduction to Creon – the new king Guiding the audience – reflecting the citizens’ concerns at this dangerous time Links to tragedy – introducing aristocratic, royal characters

  13. Give 5 adjectives to describe Antigone Find examples from the text to back up each adjective you have chosen What are Antigone’s strengths? What situations would Antigone thrive in? What would be a good career for Antigone? What are Antigone’s weaknesses? What situations would she be less successful in? What would not be a good career for Antigone? Now do the same for Creon

  14. What are the similarities and differences between Antigone and Creon? • Include: • Personality and attitude • Actions • What happens to them Creon Antigone

  15. So who is the protagonist (hero) of the play? Why do we feel sorry for Antigone? Why do we feel sorry for Creon? Who do we have the most sympathy for? Who are we meant to have most sympathy for? - consider the STRUCTURE of the play. Remember the elements of tragedy we looked at in the first lesson; which character experiences Anagnorisis? What self knowledge did Creon gain from the story? Did Antigone learn anything about herself?
