Law No. 7 of 2008 establishes a clear mandate for SCAD with detailed functions and authorities 1 Development of statistical plans and calendars Develop statistical plans and programs to support the development of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and announce in advance the annual calendar of statistical releases and publications to help in policy planning and key decision making 2 Production of official statistics Collect, classify, store, analyze and disseminate a wide range of social, demographic, economic, environmental and agricultural statistical data, also known as official statistics, by developing and using state-of-the-art means and following established procedures 3 Execution of field work activities Conduct field work statistical activities at the Emirate level such as surveys, censuses and opinion polls, including surveys that may be requested by other government entities 4 Development of Abu Dhabi statistical system Lay the foundations and rules that regulate statistical work in Abu Dhabi and collaborate with the various government entities in the preparation and dissemination of statistics in order to develop their own administrative records 5 Raise of statistical awareness Raise awareness about the role and importance of the statistical data and information in setting policies, development programs and decision making 6 Promote external cooperation Participate in statistics-related international cooperation and expertise exchange, and host local, regional and international conferences, symposia and workshops related to statistical issues

Agriculture and Environmental Statistics DepartmentObjectives Agriculture and Environmental Statistics DepartmentObjectives The Agriculture and Environmental Statistics Department objective is to: Ensure the availability of agriculture and environmental statistics that are necessary for Abu Dhabi government and researchers. To achieve this we will: • Consult users and document their needs • Develop standards and classifications that meet international best practice • Work closely with our suppliers of data to ensure they use standards and provide data • Develop, document, and implement quality assurance processes • Build a repository of data with well documented sources and quality statements • Develop our skills to meet these challenges

  12. Eurostat Key Environmental Indicators Coverage Eurostat Key Environmental Indicators Coverage • The following chart shows the number of key indicators covered by the department of agriculture & environmental statistics (from a total of 36 indicators)

  13. ESCWA Requirements ESCWA Requirements The department completely covers about 80%of the environmental indicators required by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Description of Environmental Indicators(Ambient Air Quality in Urban Areas ) Definition: Absolute values of concentration of pollutants in the air measured in urban areas Measurement: Microgram (mcg) in cubic meter (m3) of air Issue: Increased concentrations of air pollutant substances in ambient air can have a range of impacts on human health, ecosystems, and vegetation. Particulate matter (PM10), smaller than 10 (mcg) in diameter, is recognized internationally as a priority pollutant since long-term exposure or short-term inhalation of high concentrations can reduce lung capacity and increase asthmatic and respiratory symptoms. Agreements and targets: The optimization of standards for ambient air pollution in cities with respect to environmental impacts and to combined health impacts (based on WHO criteria). In the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the council of ministries issued decree No 12 of 2006 on regulation concerning protection of Air from pollution. • Data collection and calculations: • Air quality data in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is collected from a network of fixed and mobile monitoring stations located in industrial, residential/urban, road side, and city centre. The locations of the stations are determined through inclusive site evaluation, emission inventories, and atmospheric dispersion modeling. Data sources and reporting: Data on ambient air pollution concentrations are routinely collected from the monitoring stations network. General data on air quality in cities are published in SCAD statistical yearbook and annual environmental publications. Environment Agency -Abu Dhabi responsible for collecting air quality data for Abu Dhabi Emirate on the Local Level.

Annual Environmental Survey Annual Environmental Survey Since SCAD’s establishment in 2009, the Environment Statistics Section has been conducting an environmental survey covering different economic establishments and activities. Classification of economic activities is according to ISIC classification. The survey includes five environment-related topics: 1- Environmental protection expenditure 2- Energy usage 3- Water usage 4- Waste management 5- Occupational health and safety
