Many examples of job losses in the region in recent years, especially in Mayo and Roscommon, eg between 2000 and 2004 over 700 jobs were lost in the Ballina area of Mayo.
Establishment of growth centres at Castlebar, Ballina and Tuam under the National Spatial Strategy (NSS) will make the region more attractive by attracting modern, high-skilled industries to overcome the loss of jobs to low-cost labour economies. (Eastern Europe, India etc)
