  3. Detector: Provide infrastructure, support, engineering and technical support, and management (seeHassan’s talk) Computing: Provide infrastructure, support, and management (Gregory) Physicist Collaborators (SLAC BaBar) Overview-Structure and Leadership (Blair) Computing (Gregory) LST Upgrade Completion (Mark) Physics Sketches (Matt, Rainer, Veronique) Core Elements of SLAC BaBar Program DOE Program Review, SLAC, June 2007

  4. SLAC BaBar Manpower Distribution (FTE) ~constant level of effort (the apparent computing change reflects accounting differences from lab reorganization). DOE Program Review, SLAC, June 2007

  5. Detector Operations & “Service” (~0.6 of Active Physicist FTEs, ~2x nominal collaboration average) Significant role in most detector systems, MDI, computing, etc. Detector and Computing Upgrades Physics Analysis (more later) Leadership –May 2007 Collaboration Management Technical Coordinator Computing Coordinator Council Vice Chair Operations and Technical Operations Manager System Leadership & Technical Board DCH DIRC EMC IFR/LST Trigger MDI Physics and Tools Convenors (6/42-May 07 Snapshot) Quarkonia Hadronic Spectra 3 body Charmless Semileptonic Neutral Particles Reconstruction and ID Standing and Ad-hoc Committees Exec board; Speakers Bureau; Pub Board; Beyond 2008Task Force; Membership Committee; etc. SLAC Physics Program Support DOE Program Review, SLAC, June 2007

  6. Detector hardware upgrades have been completed with strong SLAC support. “Final” Detector hardware upgrade was IFR Barrel (LST Installation) completed 11/2006. (See Mark’s talk) Software upgrades still being explored that improve performance-E.g., Improved pattern recognition for tracking (Ofte). Detector and Computing: Two Upgrade Examples-2007 DOE Program Review, SLAC, June 2007

  7. Improve efficiency of track reconstruction by allowing additional patterns: 3-hit track segments and 4 hits in 3 layers of a superlayer. Improving track pattern recognition Superlayer • Reduce background from incorrectly assigned hits by an improved track-finding algorithm. • Have obtained • 0.5-2 % increase in tracking efficiency, most notably for low pT • Efficiency and purity improvements by up to a few percent. DOE Program Review, SLAC, June 2007

  8. Physics Program Support-Education • 10 Stanford Ph.D. Graduate Students (5/07). • Research Associates • Typically 10-14 • How many do we turnover? 16 in last four years • Where did they go? DOE Program Review, SLAC, June 2007

  9. BaBar SLAC Ph.D. Students Graduated Students and Thesis Topics Hiro Tanaka, Radiative Decays of the B Meson (8/02). Aron Soha, Branching Fraction and Time-Dependent CP Asymmetry in Neutral B Decays to Psi and a Neutral Pion (5/03). 10. Fully collaborative physics analysis model….. across institutions and groups. Broad program. Many different “key” results. SLAC is full participant in all phases. E.g., there were 484 BaBar Analysis Notes last year. SLAC physicist was the lead editor on 60. Some examples of SLAC BaBar’s interests: CP Violation in B p0p0 &, more generally, B mm’ where m and m’ are charmless mesons. Inclusive semi-leptonic B decays and the extraction of |Vub| & |Vcb| CP Violation and search for new physics in B fKs; B K+ K-Ks ; B KLKsKs Search for Exotic Baryons (Pentaquarks) Search for narrow mesonic resonances (Ds, X(3872), etc.) Inclusive Hadronic Spectra; p,K,p,f, h, Lc,…………….. Radiative Penguin decays; Inclusive b sg; Inclusive bdg ; B K*g; B rg; B fg; etc. ISR; Exclusive hadronic final states; Inclusive and exclusive measurements of R. Exclusive VV production in e+e- collisions. Leptonic b & c decays; (e.g., B t n(e n)(m n) ; D mn; Ds mn (tn) Exclusive B decays; B p+p-p, K, K*; B h’K* CP violation in r+r- B decays Determination of Hyperon Spins. 11. SLAC BaBar Physics Leadership HistoryAWG/Tools/Task Force Convenors • Charmless 2 Body Cristianziani, Roodman • Charmless 3 Body Dujmic, Graham • Semileptonic Luth, Dingfelder • Radiative Penquins Libby, Jessop, Convery • Leptonic Decays Robinson, Schindler • Pentaquark Halyo • Inclusive Spectra Muller, Ratcliff • Particle ID Aston • Neutral Particles/Reco and ID Roodman • Quarkonia Grenier DOE Program Review, SLAC, June 2007

  12. Collaboration Manpower Base is slowly decreasing, with…. Ever larger data sets for Physics Analyses Computing Capacity Growing Luminosity/Background growth. Increasing pressure on total manpower as LHC draws closer, and experimental data taking ends. Intensive analysis period following end of data taking. Flat need for SLAC operational support through end of running FY2008 Substantial needs for computing support during intense analysis phase (FY2009-2011). (Fy2009-2014?) Fully exploit the unique data set for physics. Future Challenges For SLAC BABAR DOE Program Review, SLAC, June 2007

  13. Summary • SLAC BaBar: • Provides infrastructure, management, and technical support for detector and computing. • Physics groups partner with the Collaboration on physics analysis, computing & detector operations. DOE Program Review, SLAC, June 2007
