Settlement Services - Challenges • Research shows that immigrants come to Canada healthier than the Canadian population but after five years, they are as or more “ill” • Diet changes • Stress increases • Under employment • Lack of job security • Mental health issues emerge and lack of accessible services complicate “illnesses” • Some evidence that the stress increases the use of “substances” • Culture conflict between parents and children/youth • Inter-generational conflict • Inter-cultural conflict • Increase in husband/wife conflict • Living with “In-laws” - issues and challenges
