  17. Tanzania’s Timeline 1497 Vasco da Gama rounded the tip of Africa and introduced Europeans to the riches of Africa. By 1506 Portugal controlled the coast of Tanzania. 1914 Great Britain obtained control over Tanzania Human ancestors lived here as long as 3 million years ago. 1884 Tribes agree to colonialization by Germany and Great Britain 3000 B.C. trade began in Tanzania During the 1800s numerous European explorers “discovered” Africa 1905-1907 the Maji Maji Rebellion broke out. 120,000 died and tribes were unified As long as 5,000 years ago people living here used click-tongue languages to communicate. 1841 Omani sultan moved the capital of Oman to Zanzibar A.D. 750 Arabs began to settle in Zanzibar to flee war. December 9, 1961 Tanzania became an independent nation.

Tinga Tinga Painting • Named after Edward Said Tinga Tinga • He began painting when he was on construction sites. • He used masonite and bicycle paint • Today many artists create Tinga Tinga paintings from ceramic tiles and paint • It has become known as “airport air” because most tourists purchase the pieces. • In order to appeal to tourists, artists often limit the size of the paintings
