Ares/Mars God of war Ares often represents the physical or violent aspect of war, in contrast to the armored Athena, whose functions as a goddess of intelligence include military strategy and generalship. Ares was a dangerous force, overwhelming, insatiable in battle, destructive, and man-slaughtering. Fear and Terror were his battle chariot. Ares is well known as the lover of Aphrodite, the goddess of love who was married to Hephaestus, god of craftsmanship. Ares is often depicted wearing a helmet, and carrying a weapon and a shield.

  24. Demeter/Ceres Mother of the Earth Demeter is the goddess of the harvest, who presided over grains and the fertility of the earth, and the cycle of life and death. Demeter's daughter Persephone was abducted to the underworld by Hades. With her loss and her grief, the seasons halted; living things ceased their growth, then began to die.Faced with the extinction of all life on earth, Zeus sent his messenger Hermes to the underworld to bring Persephone back. Hades agreed to release her if she had eaten nothing while in his realm; but Persephone had eaten a small number of pomegranate seeds. This bound her to Hades and the underworld for certain months of every year. To the Greek, this period of time is tied to the winter, when plants cease to grow due to Demeter’s pain of being apart from her daughter. Symbols: Cornucopia wheat bread honey, cats and dogs
