Kris Anderson 21-Mar-2011 Special Report NuMI Target Updates • Ongoing Work - Four Parallel Activities, Now Three • Target Hall • • NT-05 has been secured inNuMI Target Hall Morgue • • Target module ready to accept new target • Autopsy of NT-05 in Target Hall Workcell • • Done- All work on this task complete • Reclaim NT-02 as a contingency spare • •Good News: Pressure test results indicate NT-02 is still leak tight on the water and canister He volume circuit • • Bad News: Z-drive motion is likely compromised in perhaps a couple of locations • • ALARA plan in process to address slipping couplers and new bearings blocks • • May require~2 weeks of effort to reclaim z-drive motion (if possible) • NT-06 Retrofit (Activities currently on the critical path) • • Target core successfully extracted from support casing • • Old DS water turnaround successfully removed using wire EDM in WHMS • • New water turnaround design successfully fabricated, welded, X-ray inspected, • and pressure tested to 2400 psig • •Turnaround will be welded toNT-06 core and X-ray inspected Tuesday 3/22 • • All other target canister final assembly, survey, and QA expected to be complete • bySaturday 3/26

NT-06 Path •NT-06 retrofit should be completion 3/26 • Efforts for NT-06 Target/Baffle Carrier final outfitting at MI-8, survey, and Q/A expected to occur 3/28 – 4/2 • Installation of NT-06 into target chase during 4/4 – 4/9 • Estimate for beam ~12:00 on Sunday 4/10 II. NT-02 Path (Contingency Target) • NT-02 is leak tight but status of z-drive reclamation is still TBD • Likely to take about 1.5 -2 weeks of effort to define and implement procedure to assess and return z-drive mechanism to operational status; Estimate z-drive recovery end of March if repairable
