  11. The Central Challenge

  12. The Central Challenge • Intent of the Challenge: • Design and build a structure made using only materials from a list. • Approved materials do not include natural wood or products made from natural wood. • Test its strength by placing weight upon it at the Tournament and completing impacts. • Scoring based on the ratio of the weight of the Structure to the “total weight held”. • “Total weight held” = actual weight held + bonus for each successful RAM impact

  13. The Central Challenge • Intent of the Challenge (cont’d): • A Story with an unexpected event or twist. • A prop or costume using only the same material types used in the Structure.

  14. The Central Challenge • Structure Specifications: • Must be only from approved materials. • Height: At least 7.5 in. and no more than 9 in. • Weight: total weight of the structure must not exceed 175 grams ( ~ 6.15 ounces) • Must fit on the Structure Tester and have an opening the entire height of the Structure that accepts a circular column with a 2.0 in. (5.1 cm) outside diameter column.

  15. The Central Challenge • Structure Specifications – (cont’d): • Non-acceptable substances include natural wood and materials made from wood (even partially). • Teams must use at least the number of different types of materials specified for the teams competitive level [Elem = 3, Middle = 4, Secondary = 5] • Glue counts as one of the materials.Teams may use more than one type of Glue • Glue: any commercially available adhesive material capable of creating a permanent bond (incl. 2-part epoxy, Gorilla Glue, super glue, wood glue, hot glue & glue using an accelerant).

  16. Special Procedures • The structure must be made entirely of materials listed below. • Elementary level teams must use at least three (3) materials • Middle level teams must use at least four (4) materials • Secondary/college/university level teams must use at least five (5) materials • Only materials from the Structure Materials List (follows) may be used.

  17. Structure Material List (pg. 3) Aluminum Foil Bamboo Copper Wire Cork Corrugated Cardboard Duct Tape Glue Hook-&-Loop fastener Monofilament Fishing Line Newsprint Latex-Free or Mylar Balloons Latex-Free Rubber Bands Pasta (commercial, not homemade) Plastic Toothpicks Plastic Drinking/Stirring Straws Plastic Trash Bags Playing Cards Twist Ties Natural wood & products made from natural wood CANNOTbe used in the Structure or in the scored prop/costume

  18. All forms of a material count as a single material type. All forms of a material don’t need to be the same – can differ in size, shape, thickness, other characteristics, and color (be careful if wire is colored/coated).

  19. FISHING LINE AND WIRE (Examples, not all inclusive) Monofilament Fishing Line: Any single–strand non-metallic fishing line of any weight or diameter. Copper Wire: 16 gauge or smaller single strand (wire gets smaller as gauge increases), so look for between 16 and 30 gauge. Or plastic or paper covered twist ties

  20. M TAPES (Examples, not all inclusive) Clear plastic, masking & painter’s Duct tape Masking and painter’s tapes are paper backed – not allowed Duct tape is typically polyethylene coated with threads or gauze embedded.

  21. Glues/Adhesives (Examples, not all-inclusive) Hot glues allowed “Expanding” foams and similar products are not permitted

  22. Bamboo - OK Toothpicks Plastic - OK Wood - No

  23. Trash Bags Must be trash / garbage bags -- not lunch, sandwich, general storage, etc. Size: 33 gallon or less Black or white

  24. Cardboard <=3/16” thick, with a single accordion fold - OK Cardboard Corrugated rolls - No

  25. Straws Beware – some jumbo straws found in drink shops exceed ¼” diameter – not allowed

  26. Ordinary Newspaper - OK Newsprint Glossy publications - No

  27. Balloons and Rubber Bands • Must be latex free and packaging must be provided. Mylar balloons are acceptable. • Most balloons sold in hobby stores, Target & Walmart, and supermarkets are not latex free. • Hospital gift stores often have latex free balloons. • Rubber band sizes: • 1/32” to 1/8” • Loop Lengths: 1” to 6 “ or 2” to 12”

  28. The Central Challenge • Structure Specifications – (cont’d): • When the structure is checked in and when it is placed for testing it must be a single unit. Multiple free-standing pieces placed on the tester are not allowed. • Must fit • Completely on Tester Base • Around Safety Pole • Rest Only on Tester Base • Contacts only top surface of the Tester Base and the bottom surface of the Pressure Board. • May touch the safety pole.

  29. The Central Challenge • Designing and Building the Structure: • Design a structure that holds weight and takes a torsional impact load from the RAM. • Teams are encouraged to build and test structures prior to the tournament date. • Cannot use any technology that designs, creates, or aids in testing Structure. • Team members must do all tooling and/or shaping of the Structure. • Jigs must be team created. (What is a jig?)

  30. The Central Challenge • Once 8-minute presentation time begins, the team may place structure on tester base and over safety pole and start weight placement at any time. • After pressure board is placed, the team must deliver a RAM impact to a team selected corner of the pressure board. • For scoring purposes a RAM impact is the act of using the RAM impact device to strike/apply a force to a corner of the pressure board. • RAM impact device will be tournament provided.

  31. RAM Impacts • Only team members operating the RAM may be inside the safety line. • The team will place the RAM so that while at rest, its impacting face squarely contacts a marked corner. • After a successful RAM impact, a Bonus Card will be placed on the weight stack. • No weights under the Bonus Cards may be removed. Weights added after the latest Bonus Card may be removed.

  32. Weight Held Measurement: • Each time a total of 45 or more pounds (i.e., 45 to 85#) is added to the weight stack, the team must deliver another RAM impact before adding more weight. • Weight placement appraiser will notify teams if RAM impact done improperly. Team must repeat until successful. • Weight Placement Appraiser will note weight held by the structure and number of RAM impacts completed. • Total Weight Held: sum of weight successfully placed and a 50# bonus for each RAM impact completed. • Weight Held Ratio = Total Weight Held (in Pounds) ÷ the Structure’s weight (in grams, to the nearest 0.1)

  33. The Central Challenge • To Qualify For Scoring: • Structure must meet Physical Specifications • If not brought into compliance, Weight Held = 0 • Teams not making a “good faith” effort to present a Qualifying Structure for testing may present at tournament but will not advance to next level. • Points for: • Official Weight Held Ratio • How creatively multiple materials included and used in the structure.

  34. Bill of Materials • Teams must produce a Bill of Materials (BOM) listing all of the materials used in building the Structure • Examples, and/or packaging of each material used must be presented with the BOM • The Bill of Materials is in addition to the completed Expense Form • BOM must be provided to qualify for score for Structure and Prop/Costume consistency

  35. The Central Challenge - Story • The team will create and present a Story that has an unexpected twist or surprising changed. The twist should contain an element of surprise for the Appraisers.

  36. The Central Challenge - Prop • The team will build a prop or costume made from only the same material types used in their structure • They must include allof the same material types used in their Structure • They may use only the material types used • Only one prop or costume must be from same material types used in the structure • Teams will receive points if they used all and only the same material types and for creativity and workmanship.

  37. General Clarification #2 • October 15, 2012 • In the Challenge, A.5.b should read: “The Weight Placement Appraiser will inform the team each time a RAM Impact is required.  The team will then remove the RAM from the RAM Box and place it next to the Tester.”

  38. General Clarification #3 • November 1, 2012 • In the Challenge, A.5 should read: The Tournament Director will provide the Ram for use at the tournament. (See Section D.4 for a diagram of the Ram.) The Team does NOT bring, and cannot use, its own Ram at the tournament. For the purpose of this Challenge, a Ram Impact is the act of striking a marked corner of the Pressure Board with the Ram. Each Ram Impact will be delivered by a team member. The Ram has been designed to deliver a calibrated impact to the Pressure Board when operated as directed. At all tournament levels the weight of the Ram swinging head must be 2.2 pounds (1kg) plus or minus 5%. When a Ram Impact is required, it will be performed in the following manner:

  39. General Clarification #4 • November 1, 2012 • In the Challenge, A.5.d should read: The team will place the Ram so that while at rest, its impacting face squarely contacts (touches) a marked corner (team choice) of the Pressure Board. The Ram must impact the Pressure Board in an impact zone that extends from a corner to 2in (5.1cm) from the corner.  This area will be clearly marked on the side of the Pressure Board at all 8 corners.

  40. Corner designations and impact zones will likely vary between tournaments/regions. Check with your RCM.

  41. General Clarification #5 • November 26, 2012 • In the Challenge, A.3.a.ii, Latex-Free Balloons should read: Latex-Free Balloons: Commercially available non-porous mylar or plastic balloons capable of being inflated.  (Original packaging must be provided.) • Also, in the Challenge A.3.a.ii, Latex-Free Rubber Bands should read: Latex-Free Rubber Bands – Thickness/Width: 1/32in to 1/8in (0.75mm to 3.0mm); Loop Length: 1in – 6in (25 mm – 150mm) or 2in – 12in (50mm – 300mm) opened loop length: A commercially available continuous loop of synthetic rubber, used to hold items together. (Original packaging must be provided.) • And also, in the Challenge, A.3.a.ii, Pasta should read:  Pasta: A commercially available food product.  Examples would include spaghetti, lasagna, fettuccini, macaroni, and noodles.  Home-made pastas are not acceptable.

  42. Commercially available pasta, any style, cooked or uncooked. Home-made pasta is not allowable.

  43. General Clarification #6 • #6 January 8, 2013 • In the Challenge A.5.g should read:   The Ram may not be touched by anything or anyone after it is released, until it has stopped impacting the Pressure Board. • Additionally in the Challenge A.5.i.iv should read:   Ram is touched by anything or anybody after released before it has stopped impacting the Pressure Board.

  44. Team Choice Elements

  45. Team Choice Elements • Presentations include TWO separately scored creations called ‘Team Choice Elements’ • Team Choice Elements may not be a specific item already scored as part of the Central Challenge • Both Team Choice Elements must be present(ed) during 8-minute Presentation • Should have meaningful connection to Central Challenge Solution • Team Choice Elements show off or showcase Interests Skills Areas of strength Talents

  46. Team Choice Elements (cont’d) • Team Choice Elements – (cont’d): • May NOT be specific item already scored in Central Challenge – However; • May be a single distinguishable element of a required item • Must be able to be evaluated as ‘Stand Alone” item • Points for: • Creativity and Originality • Quality, Workmanship, and Effort • Integration (meaningful connection) into the Presentation

  47. Team Choice Elements (cont’d) • Team may create anything they wish for Team Choice Elements including Props Music Technical gadgets Special effects Costumes Physical actions • May Present both Team Choice Elements simultaneously provided that both can be evaluated, identified, and scored separately
