  2. Objectives: • What is AfL? • What is the purpose of AfL? • An open discussion of how AfL can be easily embedded into every lesson, with a focus on high level questioning and self/peer assessment. • Using the information gained to give feedback to pupils and plan further work.

What is AfL? a) It is based on the principle that pupils will improve most if they understand the aim of their learning, where they are in relation to this aim and how they can achieve the aim. b) The process of seeking and interpreting evidence for use by learners and their teachers to decide where the learners are in their learning, where they need to go next and how best to get there’ c) A continuous dialogue that should: focus on the whole person, taking into account feelings as well as skills, and understanding any barriers the learner may experience

  4. What is AfL? • Assessment is one of the most powerful educational tools for promoting effective learning. But it must be used in the right way. There is no evidence that increasing the amount of testingwill enhance learning.(Assessment of learning vs Assessment for learning). Instead the focus needs to be on helping teachers use assessment, as part of teaching and learning, in ways that will raise pupils’ achievement.

Effective questioning techniques that provide assessment opportunities. • How can we be sure that...?  • What is the same and what is different about...?  • Is it ever/always true/false that...?  • How do you...?  • How would you explain...?  • What does that tell us about...?  • What is wrong with...?  • Why is...true?

  9. Self-assessment activityWere you an effective participator? • Answer the following questions: • As an effective participator I think I was: outstanding/good/satisfactory/ unsatisfactory. Why? • Next lesson I could improve by:listening more in class/putting my hand up more/not talking/putting my ipod or phone away when Miss asks me (the first time!)/ asking for help when I need it

  10. Success Criteria. • To achieve an outstanding, I will be able to remember the names of eight shops. I will also be able to form my own sentences, describing what different shops well. • To achieve a good, I will be able to remember five shops and I will be able to recognise what different shops sell.

Pour finir • On a post-it note you will need to write a message to a student at Kirkby Sports College describing three NEW things you have learnt today and how they will help the students below improve their grade. • Choose which student you are going to help:Mike- Trying to move from a Grade D-C • Sarah- Trying to move from a Grade C-B • Laura- Trying to move from a Grade B-A

  13. Peer-assessment • Pupil led plenary to promote peer-assessment: Students must create their own questions to ask other students/groups of students to answer. Connect 4, Blockbusters, Wheel of fortune, ‘Who wants to be a millionaire?’ • Invites pupils to think about what they have understood as they reflect upon the lesson objectives/learning outcomes. • Pupils gain confidence as they create their own questions and answers. • Encourages pupils to listen to each other.
