  1. Amit Deepak Sajin Satish Danish Class VIII Kishore Bharati School A Shadowy Tale

  2. Objective • How to determine the height of a telephone pole or a tree or a big building without climbing the top. • How to apply the concept of Ratio-Proportion in our day to day life. • How the concept of graph help us to find a relationship between two objects/events. • Some in depth knowledge about important places in our city.

  3. Procedure • We worked in a group of five. • We researched over internet to find ways to resolve the problem. • We interviewed masons to understand their ways of measurements. • We visited different famous monuments and towers of our city. • We collected information relevant to our project.

  4. Tools Used • MeasuringTape • Sunshine

  5. We first chose two friends from our group and measured their heights and the length of their shadows at 11.00 a.m. Then we recorded those data in a table as shown below :- Activity 1

  6. Activity 2 • Then we put the measurements of height and length of shadow of the 1st boy (Amit) & the length of the shadow of the 3rd boy (Sajin) in the given formula, in order to find the height of the 3rd boy as shown below. • Formula:- Height of the 1st boyHeight of the 3rd boy (x) = Length of the shadow of 1st boy Length of the shadow of 3rd boy Height of the Sajin (x) = (160.02X78) /76.2 = 163.8cm Similarly , Height of the Satish=(162.56x75)/78.2 =155.91cm

  7. Activity 3 Similarly we measured the length of shadow of Satish & calculated his height & tabulated it:-

  8. Height Vs Length of Shadow Measurement in cm

  9. Activity 4 • Next day we divided ourselves in groups and went to visit some famous local monuments like Victoria Memorial, Shahid Miner & Calcutta TV tower, exactly at 11.00 am & there we measured the shadows of those monuments using measuring tape & noted down those data in the following way:- • Place – Kolkata • Time – 11.00 a.m.

  10. Activity 5 We, then, collected the following information from net. • Original height of Victoria Memorial=5608.32cm • Original height of Shahid Minar is= 4800cm • Original height of Kolkata TV tower is=1737.36cm

  11. Original Vs Calculated Height Height in cms

  12. What did we get?

  13. Findings • We realised that there is a definite relation between height of an object & their shadow at a particular time (morning, noon, evening). • We understood that , how the theoretical concept of Ratio-Proportion can be applied to real life situation. • It became clear to us how graphs help us to represent two or more events simultaneously. • We also understood how graphs help us to compare two or more data & find the error factors. • Also how it helps us in taking any decisions. • Awareness about the famous places situated in our city.
