Methodolgy • Results based on: • D3.1 - Algerian Environmental Analysis Report. • Only 36 partially completed questionnaires out of about 200 questionnaires sent (mail shots and direct phone calls). • Available information / reports / sources. • Main conclusions of the first Expert panel meeting on February 26.   4. Type of organisations • The main target group that already answered to the MAP IT! questionnaire are SMEs. MAP-IT! 1st Periodic Review

  5. Geographical map of target players • Mainly along the Mediterranean coast because of geographical reasons (South = Sahara). • Development in the capital cities of each region = current trend due to governmental incentives. MAP-IT! 1st Periodic Review

  6. Repartition of the ICT areas within the FP7 ICT challenges • Challenge 1 is representative of the current development and needs of the Algerian ICT sector. MAP-IT! 1st Periodic Review

Key ICT areas • Important challenges: • Challenge 1, about “pervasive and trusted networks”, corresponds to the actual deployment of ICT in Algeria (i.e. IT services). • Challenge 4, about “digital libraries and content” could allow to extend the use of internet (i.e. increase of personnel and professional websites = creation of content and maintenance). • Challenge 7, about “independent living and inclusions”, is important to develop internet access in the most rural part of the country (i.e arabisation).   8. Business areas • IT services and software products development are the most active sectors in Algeria. MAP-IT! 1st Periodic Review

  9. Cooperation level • National and international cooperations are the most developed (mainly financial / commercial co-operations). MAP-IT! 1st Periodic Review

R&D priorities – current situation • Internet: • Since 1997, generalisation of internet access all over the country(covering about 12% of the population, 4M). • New technologies(i.e. WIFI, Wimax…) are available in the main cities. • Telecommunications: • Number of mobile subscribers increases(+237% over the 2003-2004 period; 16% of the population / 10% fixed lines). • A domestic satellite system for communications set up for remote areas in the Sahara. Future ICT trends • According to our first analysis, the development of IT services and access has for consequences: • to make fundamental the protection of data transmitted and infrastructures(i.e. FP7 ICT objectives 1.4 and 1.7). • to prioritise the development of intelligent content and semantic(i.e. FP7 ICT objective 2.4). Conclusion • This report is based on only 36 partially completed questionnaires what is clearly not enough. • The first Expert Panel Meeting concluded that the general view of the ICT sector in Algeria given in the Algerian Mapping report is good but data have to be updated.
