  2. Essential Question • How did the concept of trade give birth to capitalism in Europe?

  4. Europe • By 1400’s had found the New World, set up trade, and formed new monarchies. • Monarchy: A form of government in which a king or queen controls sole power. • People are living in cities • Urbanization • Gutenberg birthed the printing press

  5. 15th century • Foundations of schools and colleges became important. • Literacy • More $ around in Europe • Rise to a new class called “the Bourgeoisie” • Strong monarchies colonize the world • Leads to new institutions and ideas

  6. Banks • Prior to 1600’s banks were either non existent or for the rich. • People start trading, investing, and saving for stocks. • This will lead to entrepreneur • Renaissance • People commission painters • Buy new things (books, paintings, etc)

Economy • Atlantic trade and colonies are making money for the “mother land.” • Imperialism will bring forth more goods (diamonds, gold, and ivory) • No more serfs, people wanted to make money on their own goods. • Idea of capitalism • Capitalism: is an economic system that allows private ownership of the means of production for profit
