Being a Teaching Faculty in a research-focused department (10 + 2 min) – coordinated Examples of effective interactions and collaborations with research-track colleagues. Ways to integrate into the activities in the departments. Who can be my advocate? What are do’s and dont’s? Most common challenges. C. Scholarship, service, and leadership (10 + 2 min) – coordinated What are the expectations and opportunities? Do administrative career options exist? D. Related to teaching (10 + 2 min) – coordinated Teaching assignments - how are they made? How to get the resources you need? Active leadership in curriculum and teaching strategies. E. Your recommendations on how to build a positive and valued presence and visibility in your department. (12 min) F. Final Q&A’s from the audience (15 min)

Being a Teaching Faculty in a research-focused department Effective interactions and collaborations with research-track colleagues: Spearheading curriculum redesign with broad input, undergraduate research seminars, coordinated teaching of large classes Ways to integrate into the activities in the departments. Office location, faculty meetings, research exam service Who can be my advocate? More senior teaching focussed faculty (in department or elsewhere), research faculty teaching similar students What are do’s and dont’s? Most common challenges Service burn-out, student "first stop" funnel effect Quantify activities + accomplishments

Scholarship, service, and leadership Scholarship • Understand your position's evaluation criteria • SoTL opportunities: Campus-wide Teaching/Learning Center • Target service opportunities that align with your passion (e.g. JSOE early intervention initiative) Service and leadership • Strategic assignments: not all teaching service should be done by teaching-focussed faculty and vice versa. • Progress with seniority: department-level, division-level, campus-level, national service

  5. D. Related to Teaching: assignments, resources, curriculum • Multiple sections of same course • Re-use material; learn what's been done • Refine/ experiment iteratively: one thing at a time

How to build a positive and valued presence and visibility in your department • Get to know your colleagues: department tea, colloquia, mailing lists (ask questions!), hiring process • Initiate conversations about teaching: onboarding guide, "talking teaching" (in person and/or listserve) • Celebrate accomplishments (yours and others) • Build visibility at university level too: look for connections with teaching faculty in other departments; bring back information to your department
