What is a Technique • A technique is the name of the method used to create an effect; for instance in poetry an author might use simile, metaphor or personification to create an image; a writer might use characterisation to make the reader feel sympathy or hatred towards the character. • It is essential, in all essays, to name the technique before explaining the effect it has on the audience.

  4. Saving Private Ryan • The techniques used in film are a little different from those presented in written texts. We are going to focus of audio and visual for now.

  5. Sort the following into audio and visual Hand Held Camera Knee High Shots Low Angle Point of View Shot Muffled Sound Obscured Lens Dialogue Music Close Up Machine Gun Fire/ Explosions Muted Slow Shutter Speed Documentary Style Muted Colours

  6. Each of the techniques must be named in your paragraphs – it makes for more sophisticated writing and a more technical essay! • On your planning sheet, fill in the techniques used in each section using your notes.

  7. Example Now think about effect – what does it look like? How does it effect what the audience’s experience?
