  1. ENERGY CLUSTERThe Industrial Cluster for Energyestablished by Regione Lombardia Milano, 11 marzo 2011 Silvia Pagani – Euroimpresa Legnano Industrial cluster for power generation, transmission and distribution

  2. Industrial plant engineering in Italy and Lombardy region • The Italian industrial, civil and infrastructural plant engineering chain, 2009 profit :145 billion Euros (source Federprogetti ) • Power generation sector (production and distribution plants and components): equal to15% -18 billion Euros (source Federprogetti ) 50% of plant engineering in Lombardy region In the Lombardy region power generation stands for: 2

  3. Energy Cluster: an industrial cluster established by Regione Lombardia An industrial cluster for energy, a network made “by the firms for the firms” with the specific intent to promote and to create an integrated supply chain in different fields of energy plant investment, and to aggregate small and medium enterprises. A cluster aimed at consolidating and capture the actual and future technical expertise thanks also to the presence of a large number of research centres and universities specialized in energy sector. A cluster promoted and supported by important firms, leaders in the field of energy, a network recognized as a supplier of excellence, providing quality products and services: a “made in Italy” in connection with the world. “Energy Cluster” has been officialy established by Regione Lombardia as a new emerging industrial network in the region. We are made in Italy aswell… 3

  4. Mission Support member companies to become more competitive: - operating on the market with a wide portfolio - with support of academic institutions - by involving R&D institutions - satisfying needs of large demanding clients • Operating as a network to reinforce and to develop the member companies to an everlasting competiveness, growth, product quality and human resources; • Improve international visibility, markets knowledge, competence and ability to operate on international markets; • Consolidate the excellence in power generation, transmission and distribution business by increasing synergies among all institutions and companies in the region. 4

  5. Productive “souls” of the cluster THE CLUSTER “SOULS” AND PRODUCTS SOUL1 Medium/large conventional utility Power Plants SOUL 2 Nuclear Power Plants SOUL 5 Transmission and distribution SOUL 3 Renewable Energy Main Sub-supplies SOUL 4 Hydraulic and geothermal power plants SOUL 6 Actual and future technologies Identification of key products Identification of technologies Identification of skills. EPC 5

  6. Lombardy region overall productive power system compared with the total supply (synthesis) Fossil energy: thermoelectric power station Gas combined cycle power plants Coal power plants Medium coal power plants Nuclear power plant third generation Solar photovoltaic Thermodinamic solar with heat storage Wind energy Vegetable biomass Non recyclable litter biomass Biofuel/biogas (except for biomass processing) Hydroelectric power plant (except for civil infrastructures) Geothermal power plant (except for civil infrastructures) Regional transfer and distribution system ((except for infrastructures) 75 % 78 % 85 % 69 % 100 % 88 % 50 % 84 % 88 % 89 % 80 % 89 % 50% CO2 free

  7. Enterprise size and turnover FIGURES: Employees: 21.022 Turnover : 8.694 million Euros 100 companies located in every Lombardy province

  8. Energy Cluster: the chain of suppliers Shared strategies, research and marketing, enterprise services coexist with competition within the Cluster. This logic can be expressed in terms of “CO-OPETITION”: enterprises invest on networking and relation so to make the maximum profit. Unfinished products Basic Components Finished Products Systems Services Finished products components / production facilities fittings Activities, services, processing and products for maintenance and renovation of production facilities Products used for basic components Systems and products used in power generation and distribution • Energy Cluster is a horizontal chain able to create vertical cooperation so to satisfy the clients needs. • The client refers to a sole supplier • Enterprises act as an integrated supply chain offering the client a “complete package”, also on a turn key basis.

  9. Number of enterpriseinvolved in each “soul” SOUL1 Medium/large conventional utility Power Plants 50 SOUL 2 Nuclear Power Plants 30 Main Sub-supplies SOUL 3 Renewable Energy 41 SOUL 5 Transmission and distribution SOUL 4 Hydraulic and geothermal power plants 30 17 46 SOUL 6 Actual and future technologies EPC 6 9

  10. More than 500 companies ranked into the industrial cluster 15% 75 170 34% 70% 350 Note: the count considered the production of different company division

  11. An international kind of network More than 100 companies within the cluster Municipality of Legnano Province of Milan Chamber of commerce of Milan Energy Lab Foundation Italian Welding Institute CNR – Italian national Council for research IrcCos Politecnico di Milano –Department of Energy and of Mechanical Engineering RSE LIUC University UNI – Ente italiano di unificazione Energy Cluster concentrates a number of different actors which are asked to create- together with enterprises- an “EXTENDED LABORATORY” where to develop research, innovation and training projects Euroimpresa Legnano Confindustria Alto Milanese Confindustria Lombardia Confindustria Bergamo Assolombarda Unione Industriali Provincia di Varese Confartigianato Alto Milanese CNA Lombardia 11

  13. Energy Cluster Board President: Alberto Ribolla Vice President : Gianni Mainini Confindustria Alto Milanese and Euroimpresa asoperationalarms of the cluster

  14. Cluster management KEY PRINCIPLES All the cluster decisions are takenbycompanies (Cluster Board) All the projects are realised involving the competencies within the Energy cluster network The cluster associative life is managed by the supplychaingroups, which are representative of the different souls Instruments Strategicguidelines (2009 – 2012) Annual Operative Plans

  15. Cluster organization PRESIDENT BOARD OF DIRECTORS SKILLS • Project management • Strategic planning process • R&Dprocess • Team building • Organizationskills • Administrativeskills • Communicationskills • Knowledgeaboutenergymatters • (specificcompetencies on productive “souls”) Cluster manager 1 humanresource senior 1 humanresource junior 3 engineers

  16. Development Guidelines STRATEGIC LINES ADDED VALUE INTEGRATION INTERNATIONALIZATION FACILITATION LOBBY MATCHING STRATEGIC AND TACTICAL SUPPORT 16

  17. Technology area – supply chain groups Needs, opportunities and targets are spotted in each sector and matched with enterprises’ potential. Each working group singles out specific operative objectives Research Centers and Universities are involved • Subgroups are created coinciding with the integrated “areas” in the supply chain • The client refers to a sole supplier • The enterprises act as a group offering the client a “complete package” Innovative projects are under development in cooperation with the research system Supply chain group 1: medium/large conventional utility power plants Supply chain group 2: nuclear power plant Supply chain group 3: renewable energy (biomass, solar, wind..) Supply chain group 4: medium/large medium/large conventional utility power plants Supply chain group 5: transmission and distribution (future technologies)
