At the end of this session participants will have:

  • reflected on the reality of a growing digital society and its impact on schools and learning,

  • considered the responsibilities of teachers to provide relevant and engaging learning experiences for the students of this digital society

  • Considered the ‘old’ & ‘new’ skills required by students to be successful in a laptop learning environment.

  • Translated these skills in terms of their own expertise to deliver in a laptop learning environment.

    Staff engaging in the optional workshop sessions may have also…

  • Contributed to a school wide audit of ICT skills and expertise to be used to plan for ongoing school based professional learning opportunities.

  • Experienced some of the “new tools” available in a laptop learning environment

It’s the middle of Term 3 2009 and every student in Yr 9 ( and many more in Yrs 10, 11 & 12) have come to class with a laptop computer in their hands…

In April the NSWSPC asked principals to rate the readiness of teachers in their school for the roll out of laptops to Yr 9 students, to teachers and to other selected students

Activity 1: How ready are you?

  • Using the personal session log you have been given ( handout 4.1) put a mark to indicate your perceived readiness for teaching in a one-to-one laptop learning environment.


It s not just the technology

It’s not just the technology!

Overseas experience has shown that students using laptops are more enthusiastic about learning, improve a wide range of skills from writing to creativity and achieve higher academic outcomes

But remember …. Laptops won’t just make this happen – it’s what teachers and students do with them that will make the difference.

  • Join your faculty group

  • Appoint a recorder

  • Discuss your understanding of the differences between a TRADITIONAL learning environment and a ONE-to-ONE LAPTOP learning environment in terms of both TEACHERS and STUDENTS.

  • Record your discussion using handout 4.2

  • Rejoin the larger group and share the key points of your discussion.

    • Question design

    • Searching NOT copying

    • Analysing, deconstructing, evaluating and synthesising (including deep skills in visual, graphic and audio texts)

    • Creating and constructing new knowledge

    • Task switching

    • Sentence construction

What OLD and NEW tools / strategies do we need to have to begin to be successful in a laptop learning environment?

In a faculty group consider the following questions and record your responses. (Handout 4.3)

  • What are the OLD teaching and learning tools / strategies that we have that will continue to play a significant role in a one-to-one laptop environment?

  • What NEW teaching and learning tools / strategies will become important for the success of our teaching and learning in a one-to-one laptop environment?

  • What are the key areas of support that we need as a group to successfully implement a one-to-one laptop environment?

    As an individual; (Use Handout 4.1 )

  • Refer to your ‘personal vision’ index card (from: Vision – Developing a vision for change) make a record of the new skills you would like to develop in order to achieve your vision in 12 months time

  • What support will you need to achieve this?

  • What will you do first?

  • Share your plan with your faculty team
