  1. Awareness raising campaign Iceland – Main action lines and first results

  2. Iceland is very special energy-country • Iceland is already 100% green and carbon free in heat- and electricity production. • The renewable energy produced is competitive with all energy sources, without special subsidies.

  3. The target group • Over 90% of houses in Iceland are heated by cheap, natural geothermal heat • The target group in Iceland for the Promise project is households with no access to geothermal heating. • This group counts for about 13.000 households both farms and small towns and villages.

  4. Grimsey • A strange place to start a campaign • Small fishing town with around 100 people • The last place in Iceland where fossil fuel is used for electricity and heat production • The only place where it is possible to save CO2 emission. • Heavy subsidies create some support possibilities

  5. Workshop and energy checks

  6. Next steps • The home energy checks were used to make an action plan. • The results were used to estimate the effects of different measures. These results were used to propose some actions to the Energy Authority, where subsidies were changed to energy efficient investments. • The Energy managed two main actions • A) New Energy efficient glazing • B) Rockwool blowing

  7. Grimsey results • 25 houses got better roof insulation • 19 houses got more efficient glass in windows • Estimated annual savings • 212.428 kWh • 23.603 liters of oil • 62.000 kg CO2

  8. Roof and window calculators

  9. Tools for the campaign • Based on the Grimsey experience, some more energy checks, Capacity building workshops and the European Scenario Awareness Workshops (EASWs). Some tools where created to tackle the challenges and problems that came up during these visits and meetings. • Am I using too much energy? • What is the actual price of electricity? • Does the action pay off?

  10. Am I using too much energy?

  11. What is the price of electricity?

  12. ********

  13. Does it pay off?

  14. Example

  15. Example • Electric heating/year 28.000 kWst • 23% is then 6.440 kWst • Each valve cost ca 8.000 ISK • 20 radiators = 160.000 ISK Does it make any sense?

  16. Purchase and running cost of a light hour

  17. Thank you!
