Indian Institute of Astrophysics a premier Institute for Research & Development in Astronomy & Astrophysics Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) traces its history from the creation of an Observatory by East India Company in Madras in 1786 which was later shifted to Kodaikanal in 1887 and today known as KodaikanalSolar Observatory of IIA. The Observatory houses over 100 yrs of data on the Sun. 6-inch Equatorial (procured in 1850) at Kodaikanal Presently IIA ‘s Main Campus is in Bangalore with well equipped optics, mechanical & electronics shops and well-stocked library, high end computing facility and high bandwidth network. It operates Observatories in different part of India Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Main Campus, Bangalore
